Archrebel Tactics Overview

This news also ties back to an event from last week, concerning one of the most intriguing and promising strategy titles I’ve been following for some time.

Archrebel Tactics

It’s called Archrebel Tactics, a retro-inspired tactical RPG that puts players in charge of a desperate fight for survival against a shadowy regime that has seized control of the outer colonies.

The game is still in development, and the big news is that its solo developer, Ularis Badler, has secured the valuable backing of publisher MicroProse. With that in mind, here are a few more details about this promising tactical RPG.

Archrebel Tactics Gameplay

Developed with clear inspiration from early tactical classics, the game combines old-school design with modern systems, giving players a blend of familiar mechanics and fresh twists.

At its core, it’s a turn-based strategy experience, but it also builds on the genre with travel mechanics, faction choices, and encounters with unpredictable alien wildlife.

Battles take place on a grid-based field with an action-point system reminiscent of Laser Squad and the early X-COM entries, though here it’s been updated with options like multi-selection to speed up command flow.

A key addition is the travel mode, which allows units to cover much larger stretches of terrain in a single turn, keeping the pace brisk on expansive maps. Outside of combat, the campaign emphasizes player agency.

Mission order is left in the player’s hands, and choices lead to branching consequences that determine how the resistance effort unfolds. Aligning with one of three major factions provides distinct advantages, influencing both resources and long-term outcomes.

Building a strong squad is another major focus. Players can expand their resistance team into a full platoon, recruit and train new soldiers, and even capture droids to deploy in combat.

Overview

Gear upgrades and class progression systems allow for deep customization, letting each unit develop along a chosen path. The game’s mission structure further reinforces replayability: scenarios are partially procedural, and it includes both a mission generator and an editor for those who want to craft or remix encounters.

Environmental interaction also plays a significant role. While enemy compounds rely on indestructible structures, most terrain can be reshaped or destroyed mid-battle, creating tactical opportunities for creative players.

On top of dealing with the occupying force, survival is complicated by Kaprical’s dangerous wildlife. Massive alien beasts roam the surface, and players will occasionally be caught between fighting hostile soldiers and surviving unexpected attacks from the planet’s native creatures, or something even more mysterious that has arrived since the colony’s fall.

The presentation leans into retro roots, with pixel-art visuals that call back to the classics but enhanced by bone-based animation, particle effects, and shader work.

The mix of nostalgia and modern design aims to give Archrebel Tactics a distinct identity while still appealing to veterans of the genre. No release date yet; the best you can do right now is wishlist it on Steam. Below you can find the announcement trailer.
