The release date has finally been announced for a CRPG I’ve been following for a long time and even got to try out a while back. Needless to say, it’s one of the games I have high hopes for, both because of its setting and its combat system.

Another Angle Games has confirmed that Shadow of the Road will launch on November 12, 2026, for PC via Steam, with publisher Owlcat Games accompanying the announcement with a new release date trailer. The date is now also listed on the game’s Steam page.

Combat system

Set in an alternate version of Japan in 1868, Shadow of the Road takes place during a civil war between the forces loyal to Shōgun Tokugawa and Emperor Mutsuhito’s technologically superior army.

Supernatural creatures, magic, and imposing steampunk machinery have become part of a setting where tradition is colliding head-on with rapid modernization.

At the center of the story are rōnin Satoru and Akira, recruited by Tokugawa’s spymaster to protect a mysterious boy struggling to control extraordinary powers. More companions join the group throughout the journey, bringing their own motivations, relationships, and personal conflicts. Decisions made along the way can strengthen bonds, destroy friendships, and alter how individual characters develop.

Combat takes the form of party-based, turn-based encounters with character abilities, and control of the initiative timeline plays a central role. Party composition is also tied to the personalities and relationships of its members. Enemies range from human soldiers and samurai to yōkai and mechanical creations.

For anyone who wants to get an early look before November, a free Steam demo is already available, covering several battles and a boss encounter. Shadow of the Road launches on November 12, 2026, and can currently be wishlisted on Steam.
