In celebration of Woman's Day 2022 (just a little late), I want to list the ten best and most well-known turn-based games with females in the main role. A few I'm yet to play - still, I thought they looked too good not to write about, and are highly recommended. Also, I'll focus only on those games where the hero is always female - not those where you can choose to play as one. This means no Pokémon, or anything like that, with character creation. Although there were some great releases in February, as well - it's the next months that promise to be chockablock with fantastic games. So much so that the players may not even be able to keep up! Time for some truth; I've never played a Pokémon game until now. Okay, I lie, I played maybe 30 minutes of one of those on Game Boy Color - but that was it. For some reason, I never got into the series, as it never appealed to me as a child; it was also a time when I wasn’t a fan of turn-based games. Luckily, I changed that mindset, enjoyed some turn-based games, and now I am a fan of the genre. But there was still one thing I had to correct. I had to play a Pokémon game. And with the new Pokémon Legends: Arceus I finally had a chance to do it.

Once again, it's that time of the year, when every developer works extra hard to make sure they have a demo ready. It's like Christmas, but instead of presents, there is a glorious bounty of demos to try - for all those upcoming games, players have been frothing at the mouth for. This is the main event for most developers - one of the few times when all eyes will be on their projects. Those aren't just potential players these demos will be attracting, either. There are also content creators, who could make or break a game. Now it may not be as grim as this, but it is crazy out there. If you can survive the plethora that is Steam Next Fest, then you can survive anything.

When it comes to horror in video games, everyone thinks of the same few titles. Whether it be Resident Evil, Silent Hill, or the many others that followed in their footsteps, they all have one thing in common: They are all real-time and action-based. There's something about that intensity - of having to react quickly, while being hunted - that sadly just can not be replicated using the more tactical/turn-based approach.

Tactics, strategy and planning. These are all things one wouldn’t associate with a series like Gears of War. Yet, here I sit, pondering how that very concept ever came up in a meeting. A series well known for being fast-paced and action-orientated turning into a tactics game - definitely something I never thought I would see.
Top 5 Main Characters from Turn-Based RPGs
I enjoy turn-based RPGs! I wouldn’t say that I am the biggest fan and that I play every single title that comes out, but I did play a fair amount of them. What I like most about the genre is the breathtaking worlds, the great side characters, the fun and random quests, the story (at least when it's not too convoluted…) and the general system. However, for all these amazing things, there is one area where they don’t do as well. It’s their main character. Leaving aside the usual praise for Cloud from Final Fantasy 7, most main characters are bland compared to the supporting cast.

Normally this would be a standard “my top turn-based picks from 2021”, but for some reason, most of the turn-based games I played this year were from another year, mostly 2020. So instead of my five picks, this is more like my 5 favourite turn-based games I played this year.
