Project Zircon Overview

I recently went back and cleaned up one of my older articles on deckbuilders, organizing the games into categories and rounding up 25 of the best the genre has to offer today. As you know, this is a genre that has absolutely exploded in recent years, and there are now countless games built around card mechanics and deckbuilding, in a space dominated almost entirely by indie developers.

Today, however, I’m announcing a deckbuilder coming from a major publisher you might not expect: Konami, with its PROJECT ZIRCON. I’ve gathered the limited information currently available.

Project Zircon

In PROJECT ZIRCON, keeping a country alive depends on the characters you recruit, the facilities you build, and the card combinations you assemble. Unveiled during Konami Press Start on September 3, 2026, the roguelite deckbuilder casts you as a ruler responding to the return of the Calamity Dragon of the Abyss.

Two Phases, Five In-Game Years

A run spans five in-game years, with an annual target your nation must meet to survive. Completing the Normal Route requires defeating the dragon in year five. Konami describes each run as a roughly one-hour experience.

Dialogues

Play alternates between a Strategy Phase and an Admin Phase. Strategy covers preparation, including territorial expansion and acquiring character cards and facilities. Administration puts those acquisitions to work through card combinations.

That division suggests the main challenge lies in making development decisions that support the deck you are assembling, then using that deck effectively.

Three resources fund development: Commerce, Industry, and Culture Points. Character cards have Rank and Type properties, while combinations involving cards and facilities determine the rewards you earn. Up to three equipped zirpowers grant additional abilities.

Branching Objectives and Unlockable Starting Decks

Events and decisions can redirect the story toward different endings. Konami describes choices that weigh a nation’s immediate survival against its longer-term future, with changing circumstances requiring adjustments to the deck and strategy during a run.

Those branches can also change the victory conditions: some routes require objectives beyond accumulating Military Points and defeating the dragon. Across repeated attempts, increasing your Player Level unlocks additional facilities and starting decks.

Release Plans and the Project’s Earlier History

The PROJECT ZIRCON name predates this game reveal. Konami introduced the broader community-driven project at Tokyo Game Show 2023, and earlier official material described a Web3 initiative in which participants could own character NFTs and contribute to the setting.

Neither the new Steam description nor the September announcement specifies blockchain gameplay or NFT requirements for this release.

Konami is listed as both developer and publisher. PROJECT ZIRCON is coming to Windows PC through Steam, with wishlisting available and no announced release date.

A further gameplay presentation is scheduled for September 19 at Tokyo Game Show 2026, where producer Shiro will demonstrate the game and discuss its systems.
