Kill The Shadow - Overview

Solve Murders, Break Rules, and Shape the Ending

Here’s another title that’s been on my wishlist for quite some time, yet I hadn’t introduced it on TBL until now.

Kill the Shadow is for sure one of the most intriguing RPGs in development right now. Developed by Shadowlight, it blends a narrative-driven detective story with old-school role-playing mechanics, throwing you into the grim heart of Dark Water City, a fictional metropolis torn in half by a decade-old uprising and foreign occupation.

The result is a moody, fragmented world steeped in tension, where every alley hides secrets and each decision can push the story in a new direction.

In Shadowlight’s Kill the Shadow, justice isn’t a straight line so much as a thread board of possibilities. Set in an alternate, post‑war metropolis literally split in two, you play Detective Lucas working cases that spiral from a poisoned dog to severed limbs in the sewers.

Your uneasy partner is the titular Shadow, a sardonic hitchhiker who can taste memories and help you rewind scenes to reconstruct the past.

It’s a hooky noir pitch: kill, judge, or even kiss the mastermind, and the game leans into that cheek with equal parts grit and melancholy.

Mechanically, Kill the Shadow mixes conversation‑heavy sleuthing with a formal Deduction System: you collect evidence, pin it to a corkboard, then connect threads to reach your own conclusions.

Progress isn’t gated by a single solution; it’s steered by who you are and how you choose to act. Lucas levels three attributes: Strength, Spirit, Charm, which open distinct routes: intimidation, psychological gambits, plain‑spoken empathy, bribery, or, when patience runs out, violence.

The Shadow’s rewind supply a second axis, letting you replay moments and surface hidden truths the living would rather forget.

Shadowlight’s city, Dark Water, is a character in itself. Ten years after the schism that divided it, you’ll pick through a steel‑forest factory, the water‑built Shipwreck docks, the dense Zhulong Walled City, and a bustling old quarter, meeting all sorts of NPCs, and each of them comes with relationships that can warm or curdle.

The presentation is immediately striking: high‑definition 3D environments populated by crisp 2D pixel characters. The contrast reads like neon‑noir stained glass and retro silhouettes moving through cinematic, depth‑rich dioramas.

It’s a look that screenshots can’t fully convey; trailers and demo footage showcase rewind vignettes, interrogation standoffs, and deduction boards snapping together with a satisfying click.

If the concept sounds unusually confident for a debut, that’s because Kill the Shadow grew up in public. Shadowlight’s core members met as students, prototyped the game in 2022, and won university competition awards before deciding to form a studio rather than drift apart after graduation.

Early builds even toyed with platforming and combat before the team tore them out to focus on narrative, deduction, and presentation.

That student‑to‑studio leap attracted heavyweight mentorship. In 2023, HYPERGRYPH, the company behind Arknights, backed the team through its COREBLAZER incubator. Jin Wang, Hypergryph’s director of game investments, says they “backed them from day one” and helped broker a global publishing deal with NEOWIZ this June.

NEOWIZ CEO Seung‑chul Kim framed the partnership as a meeting of minds around “high‑quality narrative games for both PC and console players,” a strategic throughline for the publisher since Lies of P.

That said, Kill the Shadow is shaping up to be a truly promising, and above all, authentic project. The Shadowlight team will be on site at COREBLAZER GAME FEST 2025, a major indie showcase in Shanghai running July 26–27.

There’s still no word on a launch date, but in the meantime, you can dive into the playable demo on Steam. You’ll find the gameplay trailer just below.
