Slaves of Magic is a new take on the X-COM formula inside a fantasy setting

Amethyst Dreamers has released Slaves of Magic, bringing a new fantasy take on squad tactics after several years of development.

Slaves of Magic XCOM-Like

Slaves of Magic is a strategy, turn-based tactical RPG about organizing a resistance against otherworldly invaders who use elemental sorcery while masquerading as old gods. Between missions, players build and manage safehouse bases across a continent.

Each region offers unique resources and equipment options, so choosing where to expand impacts what the squad can field. On the strategic layer, the invaders don’t wait around; they send multiple armies on monthly operations.

A reactive campaign AI evaluates the threat the resistance poses and adjusts plans, forcing players to decide which enemy pushes to slow and which to ignore.

On the tactical side, Slaves of Magic fields six to eight operatives per mission. There are no fixed classes; instead, characters learn attributes such as “sword-wielding” or “barbarian,” then mix equipment and skills to create a custom kit.

The insertion tool of choice is a stolen teleporter, letting squads deploy precisely around objectives rather than starting at the map edge. Positioning and team coordination are emphasized, with missions framed as sabotage and disruption rather than set-piece battles.

The developers highlight replayability through multiple invading factions, different enemy rosters, and the campaign AI’s shifting priorities, alongside the practical reality that players won’t be able to unlock everything on a single run.

Today’s launch formalizes a release window that Amethyst Dreamers announced in August with a new trailer and the retirement of the old demo.

Slaves of Magic is developed by Amethyst Dreamers and is out now on Steam for Windows PC. The developer hasn’t announced additional platforms. The launch discount runs through November 9.
