Playwood Project’s strategy title hits full release with expanded content, new heroes, and revamped gameplay modes.

Playwood Project, the Danish indie studio behind Wartile, has announced that their tactical RPG Successor will officially launch in full on October 24, 2025, exiting Early Access with a substantial 1.0 update. Released on Steam for PC, the final version arrives after months of iterative development shaped by community feedback.

Successor Tactical Roguelite

Set in a dark, richly detailed miniature world, Successor blends real-time combat with tactical pause, rogue-lite mechanics, and kingdom-spanning campaigns.

Players choose a Lord, assemble a warband of unique heroes, and set out across procedurally generated regions to conquer rival factions, claim their Crowns, and unlock powerful meta-progression systems that deepen future runs.

According to Playwood Project’s Creative Director Michael Rud Jakobsen, the studio set out to bring “the board-game-brought-to-life fantasy” to players.

Successor Tactical Roguelite

He described Successor as a fast-paced tactical experience where players can roam lush diorama battlefields, customize their heroes, and confront ruthless rulers through a hybrid combat system that combines the strategic control of turn-based gameplay with the urgency of real-time execution.

The game’s 1.0 release features six handcrafted story campaigns, each presenting a distinct narrative path, as well as a redesigned Adventure Mode.

This mode allows players to embark on custom campaigns against randomly arranged regions, encounter dynamic challenges, and earn high-risk, high-reward upgrades. Every run offers a new layout, escalating enemies, and diverse strategic considerations.

Successor

Combat in Successor is defined by its real-time with tactical pause mechanic, which gives players the freedom to pause the game at any moment to issue orders, trigger abilities, or reposition units before resuming the action. This hybrid system creates a constant sense of pressure while rewarding timely decisions and careful planning.

At launch, Successor offers eight playable heroes, each filling a unique role on the battlefield with distinct abilities and class synergies.

Players also select between two Lords to determine their overarching kingdom strategy, with each Lord unlocking powerful perks and altering long-term tactics. The party-building system encourages experimentation and creative synergy between roles.

Successor Tactical Roguelite

The world of Successor is presented as a living tabletop diorama, with handcrafted battle boards spanning eight distinct biomes, from grassy fields and mountain passes to swampy ruins, cities, deep caves, and crumbling towers.

Each board features randomized terrain layouts that prioritize elevation, positioning, and environmental strategy. Flanking, chokepoints, and terrain advantages play a major role in the outcome of battles.

The 1.0 release significantly expands the game’s scope compared to its Early Access version. Players will encounter more regions, a broader variety of handcrafted boards, and greater enemy diversity across mid- and late-game encounters.

Two new heroes join the roster at launch: the Ice Giant, a tanky front-liner who uses freeze-and-shatter combos, and the Sorceress, a support caster who excels at frost magic and team buffs.

The newly introduced Havengore faction and the Regicide campaign add fresh story content, while the inclusion of equippable Ruler Crowns allows players to further customize their Lords with gameplay-altering traits.

A robust progression system underpins every session. Completing campaigns and challenges earns permanent upgrades, unlocking new gear, heroes, and strategic perks. Even short gameplay loops contribute to long-term progress, making Successor easy to jump into while remaining deeply rewarding over time.

Successor officially launches on Steam for PC on October 24, 2025, priced at $24.99, with a 35% launch discount available for the first 12 days. It previously entered Early Access on May 29, 2025, and was also released on Meta Quest (Quest 3/3S/2) as a VR title on September 11, 2025.
