New trailer sets the tone for Isometric RPG Shadow Of The Road
Shadow of the Road has a new feature trailer that pins the tactical RPG to a 2026 release window, framing its setting through a slick in-world broadcast from the East Nippon Company. The game is in development at Another Angle Games with Owlcat Games publishing, and it is planned for PC, with store pages already live across Steam, GOG, and the Epic Games Store.

The setting takes real friction from late 19th century Japan, then reshapes it into a sharper genre conflict.
Shadow of the Road plays out in a reimagined 1868, during a civil war between the traditionalist forces of Shōgun Tokugawa and the army supporting Emperor Mutsuhito, backed by the British East Nippon Company. That power is positioned as the tech-forward faction, bringing advanced weapons and steam-driven machinery into a society still rooted in older structures, while magic and folklore sit right beside the industrial push.
The new trailer leans hard on corporate optimism and imperial messaging, which fits the game’s larger angle. The background details still matter, though, because the whole pitch depends on friction between lived tradition, political loyalty, and the kind of modernization that arrives unevenly and leaves damage behind.

That tension becomes the stage for a party-driven story where machinery and magic work as metaphors for forces the characters cannot fully control.
On the narrative side, the core journey follows a Tokugawa spymaster’s mission that puts two rōnin, Satoru and Akira, on escort duty for a mysterious boy with immense, unstable power. Other allies join over time, each with their own motives, and the story treats relationships as part of the system.
Choices can create bonds, break them, or push characters onto different personal paths, with consequences that carry forward through the campaign.

Combat is built around classic turn-based party fights with a samurai tactics flavor. Each character brings distinct abilities plus personal goals that can influence encounters.
The enemy mix supports the setting mashup too, with fights against yōkai alongside steampunk contraptions, which should keep loadouts flexible across supernatural threats and armored machinery.
A playable demo is already available on Steam, released July 15, 2025, which lets players sample the tone and the basic loop ahead of launch. The main Steam listing still shows a to-be-announced date, but the new trailer puts the target year on the board as 2026. Below is the 2026 release trailer.
