Melbourne-based developer Effort Star and publisher Joystick Ventures officially release their highly anticipated turn-based roguelike following a strategic scheduling pivot.

Independent developer Effort Star, in partnership with publisher Joystick Ventures, is thrilled to announce that Enter the Chronosphere is officially available today on PC via Steam Early Access.

Initially scheduled for mid-May, the team playfully delayed the launch by eleven days to dodge a high-profile release day collision with Subnautica 2. Releasing today, Enter the Chronosphere steps boldly into the spotlight, bringing a genre-bending “turn-based tactical bullet hell” experience to roguelike fans.

Time Moves Only When You Do

Enter the Chronosphere takes the frantic, overwhelming nature of classic bullet hell shooters and fuses it with the deliberate pacing of traditional roguelikes.

Heavily inspired by the “time moves when you move” mechanic popularized by titles like Superhot, the game takes the action entirely off the grid. When players stop to think, bullets freeze in mid-air, and enemies halt mid-stride, revealing their trajectories and next moves.

The moment the player acts—whether executing a dodge roll, reloading a shotgun, or calling in an artillery strike—the universe snaps back into high gear.

Early Access Features at Launch

Developed over several years following a successful 2021 7DRL (7-Day Roguelike) prototype, the Early Access version debuts with a rich suite of content designed to give players 40+ hours of metaprogression:

  • Five Unique Biomes: Procedurally-generated “chronospheres”—colossal, reality-distorting structures that have consumed alien worlds.
  • Three Playable Misfits: Take control of Marcia (the last human in the universe), Urtar (a powerhouse space bear), or Lillipilly (an incredibly cool frog).
  • Insane Weapon Combinations: Mix and match an exotic arsenal of weapons and alien gadgets. Upgrades allow for wild modifications, such as tweaking a chainsaw to plant alien eggs inside enemies that detonate like living bombs.
  • Seamless Progression: Players who participated in the recent Steam Next Fest will have all of their unlockables, completed missions, and character progress carry over seamlessly into the Early Access build.

“We have been working on this game for a long time to get it to a level of quality and scope that we’re proud of,” said the development team at Effort Star. “Now, we are incredibly excited to build upon this foundation and shape the road to 1.0 alongside our community.”

The Road Ahead

Effort Star plans for Enter the Chronosphere to remain in Early Access for roughly six months. A comprehensive content roadmap will be shared shortly after launch, promising new biomes, additional playable characters with distinct story arcs, expanded weapon pools, and a finalized narrative.
