The free-to-play strategy brawler skips meta progression and pay-to-win, with a demo set for January 17 and a Steam Next Fest showing in February 2026.
Athelan Battlegrounds is a turn-based tactics PVP game from Athelan Games, a two-person indie team based in Canada.

It is being built around a pretty strict idea of competitive fairness. Matches are meant to hinge on decision-making in the fight. The team is positioning it as free to play with no meta progression, no pay to win, and a shop that stays cosmetic. Champions are planned to be unlockable with earnable soft currency, while optional purchases lean toward visuals or quality of life extras that do not change combat power.
The core loop is team building plus short, high-information tactical clashes. Two PVP formats are planned, a larger 10v10 mode and a tighter 5v5 mode, with ranked and unranked options for both.

Before you queue, the board editor is where you assemble a squad layout, save multiple setups, then swap plans quickly when you want a different look at the same matchup.
The game supports practice fights against AI opponents across different skill levels, which is useful if you want to lab openings, test team compositions, or just get comfortable with turn pacing before jumping into ranked.
One developer post calls out displacement tools like pulls and pushes, including a champion who can hook an enemy across tiles, then spend a turn charging before a heavy hit, plus another that can shove a target off the board for an instant removal when they are trapped at the edge.

After a match, you can replay for analysis, edit player profiles, use global chat channels, and access a level editor for custom training spaces or community-made scenarios.
The setting frames all of this as a sci-fi arena that replaced planet-killing wars with regulated champion duels. The backstory describes the Veyrathi enforcing a Cosmic Law in which a single match can decide the fate of entire worlds, with champions bound to the battlegrounds by implants that prevent escape.
On schedule, the Steam store page lists a 2026 release window for PC via Steam, with English and French listed for interface and subtitles.
The studio has been pointing to a demo release on January 17, 2026, and it has mentioned showing the demo during the Steam Next Fest February 2026 Edition, which runs February 23 through March 2, 2026. Below is the official trailer.
