Culdcept BEGINS Overview

Neos Corporation revives the long-running Japanese strategy series with a new story, over 400 cards, dice-driven movement, and territory-based battles.

At first glance, Culdcept BEGINS might not look like a traditional JRPG. There are no long dungeon crawls, no standard party formation, and no familiar menu-based combat mechanics. But look a little closer, and its turn-based soul becomes clear: this is a game about planning, risk, deck construction, positioning, and the constant tension between what the dice give you and what your cards allow you to do.

Culdcept BEGINS

Developed and published by Neos Corporation, Culdcept BEGINS marks the return of a cult Japanese series that has always existed in its own strange corner of the genre.

The basic idea is simple as players move around a board, claim territory, summon creatures, cast spells, and use items to outmaneuver their rivals. The result is a hybrid that sits somewhere between a tactical board game, a card battler, and a strategy RPG. According to the official site, this new entry arrives after a ten-year gap and is part of a series that has been around for nearly three decades.

The game is set on Bavrashka, a continent said to have been created by the gods. At the center of the story is the Royal Cept Academy, an institution where students learn to use mysterious stone tablets known as Culds.

The protagonist, Kamru, is a transfer student whose abilities as a Cepter begin to awaken during a war that threatens the continent. It is a classic fantasy setting, but filtered through Culdcept’s unusual ruleset, where battles are fought not only through characters but also through cards, land, and long-term board control.

Culdcept BEGINS

The heart of Culdcept BEGINS is its card system. Players build a personal “Book,” essentially their deck, using Creature, Spell, and Item cards taken from over 400 cards available.

What makes Culdcept stand apart from many other card RPGs is the board-game layer. Movement is decided by dice, which means players are constantly adapting to uncertain positioning.

A bad roll can become manageable with the right spell. A vulnerable territory can turn into a trap if protected by the right creature. A strong card may be useless if played at the wrong moment. That balance between luck and planning has always been one of the series’ defining traits.

Culdcept BEGINS

For newcomers, Culdcept BEGINS is being positioned as a more accessible evolution of the formula, while still preserving the identity of the series.

The game also introduces a refreshed visual identity, with character designs by Satoshi Matsuura, known for his work connected to titles such as Legend of Mana and Mother 3. RPG Site recently discussed the project with Neos, where the team emphasized the importance of maintaining what makes Culdcept recognizable while also creating a new world and presentation for modern players.

Culdcept BEGINS is currently scheduled for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 on July 16, 2026. A physical edition for Europe and North America is planned for September 17, 2026, while the Steam version is listed for 2026 without a set release date.
