There’s no shortage of tactical RPGs trying to scratch that Final Fantasy Tactics itch, but Never’s End looks like the rare one that could actually deliver. Developed by indie studio Hypersect, this game throws you into a dying world, lets you body-snatch villagers, and tells you to save the last flicker of human civilization. All in turn-based fashion, of course.

The pedigree behind Never’s End is undeniable. Masayoshi Nishimura, the artist behind the striking characters of Octopath Traveler, brings his detailed, storybook style to the cast. The soundtrack is being handled by Doseone, known for his genre-defying work on Enter the Gungeon, and from what I’ve heard so far, it leans heavily into eerie, otherworldly vibes that match the tone perfectly.
Unlike many grid-based tactics games, this isn’t a simple case of moving your sword guy next to the enemy and pressing attack. Never’s End features deeply interactive battlegrounds, where weather, terrain, and elemental magic are all in play. You can freeze rivers to cross them, melt the ground into lava to trap enemies, or summon winds to blow foes off cliffs. Hypersect promises that “every battlefield is unique,” and from the footage they’ve shown, it doesn’t look like hyperbole.

Customization goes deep, too. As you clear out settlements and temples, you can rebuild them, creating new hubs filled with blacksmiths, traders, and potential companions. But don’t get too attached, companions aren’t recruited in the traditional sense. Instead, you possess them. As in, literally take over their body, erasing their will to turn them into a tool for your cause. It’s dark. And fascinating. Every ally is another life claimed in service of a greater good.
The open world has clear influences from Divinity: Original Sin 2 and even Breath of the Wild. You’re free to explore, gather power, and shape the world as you see fit. But the longer you take, the stronger the Never, the game’s mysterious world-ending force, becomes.

Never’s End is due out in late 2025 for PlayStation consoles and PC via Steam. No price yet, but it’s already made its way onto plenty of wishlists, mine included. Below is an overview and trailer.
About This Game
Humanity stands on the brink of extinction. Only one village remains—an island of safety in a world devoured by the creeping darkness of the Never. You are their last hope: an undying warrior spirit, embodied in living silver, with the strength to face the Never’s endless hordes.
Never’s End is a turn-based tactical RPG about possession, sacrifice, and the power to reshape your world. Turn townsfolk into your mortal vessels, imbue them with elemental magic, and explore a vast and deadly wilderness in your quest to finally end the Never.
The world of Never’s End is deeply simulated and completely interactive. Temperature, weather, wind, water level, and even the density of the earth beneath your feet can all be manipulated to gain the advantage in combat.
Drain rivers dry or flood the battlefield. Create rain and fog to hamper your enemies, or mighty winds to hurl them over cliffs. Freeze your foes or set them aflame. Reshape earth to gain the high ground, or melt it into deadly lava. Every battlefield is rife with opportunities—a well-placed spell can be the difference between victory and defeat.
Only you can survive the Never. Rather than recruiting allies, you must possess them—burning away their self and soul to turn them into living weapons. For each companion you gain, another life is lost: doomed to fight at your side until either you succeed, or they fall in battle.
Fight your way through an open world of rain-soaked jungles, blistering deserts, and freezing tundra as you explore the wreckage of a forgotten golden age. Cleanse corrupted settlements, awaken long-dormant temples, unearth lost technology, and then reap the rewards as civilization rebuilds in your wake.
Your path to victory is your own. Will you hunt fearsome beasts to upgrade your temples, or establish new towns to grow your ranks? Will you trade lives in search of greater power, or prove your skill by heading straight for the Never’s heart?
There are many ways to prepare for the final battle, but every choice has consequences. The longer you take, the more lives you’ll require… and the stronger the Never becomes.
