Marisa Kirisame has managed to vanish into trouble once again, only this time the trail leads inside a magical book that isn’t even finished. That’s the premise of Marisa of Liartop Mountain, a digital tabletop RPG from UnknownX and Alliance Arts.
It’s a Touhou Project twist on the old gamebook formula, where every turn of the page is shaped by dice rolls and choices.
You play as Reimu Hakurei, shrine maiden and long-time series lead, as she chases Marisa into the shifting, unpredictable world of the storybook.
Pages can open into a gaudy carnival, a desolate desert, or the hallways of a mysterious mansion, and each setting hides more forks in the road than you can count on one hand. A good roll might mean progress, but a bad one could send Reimu tumbling into trouble.
Helping, or occasionally hindering her along the way, are four familiar names from the Scarlet Devil Mansion: Remilia, Flandre, Sakuya, and Patchouli.
They offer guidance that can unlock new dice and abilities, but their advice isn’t always the safest to follow. Listening too closely might leave you staring down a fight you weren’t ready for.
The game has been slowly building toward release with a demo on Steam, most recently updated in June with the Scarlet Devil Mansion chapter.
That update added the quartet of advisors, more than twenty types of dice, expanded exploration, and a few digital comforts like Steam Cloud saves and achievements. The idea is to blend the unpredictability of a tabletop session with the speed and polish of a digital RPG, while keeping things firmly in Touhou territory.
Behind the scenes, the scenario is written by Hugo Hall, music comes from RD-Sounds, and there’s even a theme song by Sarasa Toumi. A Japanese deluxe edition is due out with the usual array of collector’s extras, but the core game will land worldwide in multiple languages including English, Japanese, Chinese, and Korean.
So yes, it’s dice and books, but with a Touhou spin: whimsical, precarious, and very much at the mercy of chance.
