I’ll also include it in Saturday’s roundup, but in the meantime, I wanted to point out the demo for a great classic that definitely deserves a spot on your radar. Hammer of the Gods Classic is going to Steam, a turn-based 4X strategy game where your objective in building an empire is to become Odin’s chosen.

Hammer of the Gods Classic

Originally released in 1994, it’s in the same studio catalog as Emperor of the Fading Suns and Machiavelli the Prince. It goes back to Several Dudes Holistic Gaming (a team of Georgia Tech students who later rebranded as Holistic Design) which is rather a name to have left behind.

A Viking Empire With Divine Ambitions

It’s a mythological version of Europe with humans battling it out for power alongside elves, trolls and dwarves. You’ve got coastal raids, captured towns, roads, and defensive castles to build up an empire, and of course maintaining your honor is key to your standing with the other Vikings.

The family of gods you choose will dictate the path to victory, and the campaign takes on a distinctly religious flavor in terms of the strategic decisions you make.

Hammer of the Gods

Coastal raids, captured settlements, roads and defensive castles give you an empire to manage, while maintaining honor matters to your standing among other Vikings. Your choice of a family of gods shapes the route towards victory, giving the campaign a religious dimension that reaches into its strategic decisions.

The original game has its divine assignments organized into a branching god tree (based on Yggdrasil). Progress is all about earning access to the higher gods and the game proper culminates in Odin’s final quest. That structure gives the expansion a very clear raison d’etre in that your military and economic decisions will all be geared towards climbing the divine tree.

Those quests also feed back into your forces. Divine rewards can be magical weapons, armor, heroes, special troops, and spells. I like the idea of having to balance the next favor against what your army actually needs; that gives the divine a very direct role in your campaign planning.

Tactical Battles and a Familiar Comparison

Combat moves to a separate battlefield. Under the original rules, the defender acts first, and each unit normally moves one space or attacks on its turn. Ranged reach is determined by the unit’s Missile rating. A small encounter therefore requires you to assess distances and decide when it is appropriate to advance into an opponent’s range.

Holistic describes their combat as a system which was later picked up by Heroes of Might and Magic.

A Free Demo Ahead of the Full Release

A free demo released 21st October 2026 gives you the human Viking faction and access to the first 7 Gods and Goddesses. You can raid and take settlements, build up an army, and be under attack by knights and their retinues.

Hammer of the Gods Classic is being developed and published by Holistic Design, with Windows and Linux available on Steam. The full release date is yet to be announced. You can wishlist it and download the free demo now.
