When you want something meatier to chew on, Expeditions: Rome still stands out as a smart hybrid, CRPG progression wrapped around tactical combat.
It’s a straightforward recommendation at its current price (75% off), especially if you missed it at launch and you’re in the mood for a historical tactics campaign with proper role-play legs.
Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden pairs just as well with a quieter evening: think XCOM-style shootouts grafted onto real-time stealth, where picking apart patrol routes before you fire the first shot matters as much as the percentage to hit. This isometric RPG is now 75% off.
Let me take you through another leap into the past with one of the greatest tactical RPGs ever, Gears Tactics. It trims the bloat, doubles down on aggressive play, executions to extend turns and overwatch against the locusts.
A technically impressive title, even if it’s missing the strategic layer of XCOM-style games that I always look for in strategy titles, I can’t help but recommend it given the hefty 75% discount.
Another tactical RPG which pulls in the opposite direction is Inkbound: co-op-friendly runs where you draft abilities on the fly, lean into synergies, and dash through turn-based encounters that feel brisk without losing the tactical read.
It’s a good Deck companion if you enjoy quick sessions that still scratch the build-craft itch, now with a 75% discount.
For something lighter without going shallow, Born of Bread is a charming, paper-theater RPG where turn-based battles mix timing prompts with status setups; it’s breezy but not brainless, and the discount of 75% finally puts it in that why-not zone.
Nostalgia never hurts, and Heroes of Might & Magic III – HD Edition remains an easy comfort pick when you want that classic loop of town building, map control, and turn order trickery. The HD version isn’t the modder’s dream, but at the current price, it’s a gentle on-ramp back into a formula that still works.
I think it’s the perfect warm-up (with a 75% discount) for what awaits us with Olden Era, which, by the way, we tried out a few hours ago and already shared our first impressions.
On the style side, Wolfstride offers a different flavor entirely: turn-based mecha duels framed by a scrappy, black-and-white anime presentation and down-on-their-luck characters chasing a shot at the big tournament. A classic combat system and tons of style at 75% off.

To be honest, this is one of those titles that’s pretty much always heavily discounted, and I pretty much always end up adding it to my lists. It’s an easy recommendation if you prefer story-heavy tactics with consequences you’ll feel 10 hours later and the 70% discount it’s just another reason.
The team at Artificer recently announced their new title, Minos, but before jumping into that, you should give their previous work a shot, Showgunners, now 70% off.
Still does the TV-death-game thing better than most, and the discount makes it an easy add; the arenas read cleanly, the overwatch traps feel fair, and the mid-mission sponsorship perks keep runs spicy without turning them chaotic.
Nemesis: Lockdown is the opposite mood, slow dread, tight sightlines, and just enough RNG to make every corridor dangerous.
It’s priced to tempt anyone who likes event-driven objectives and fragile alliances, and the current promo runs (70%) through the end of the sale window, so you can safely leave it on the short list while you decide on bigger buys.
Untamed Tactics slots in as the breezy tactics palate cleanser: short encounters, readable skills, and a story that doesn’t overstay its welcome. With the sale cut (70%), it’s perfect one-chapter before-bed material and a good Steam Deck travel companion if you like quick, decisive turns.
If you’d rather chew on a deck-battler with a darker tone, Shattered Heaven is well worth the small price discounted of 60%.
It combines party management with card-driven battles and a grim campaign structure that keeps you toggling between expeditions, and the demo’s still available if you want to try it first.
I know, I haven’t recommended anything purely strategic up to this point. That’s why the list includes SpellForce: Conquest of Eo, a strategy game, yes, but with a strong RPG streak.
It remains a standout for strategy fans who want a 4X-meets-tactics loop without the bloat. You roam as a wizard, plant lodges, craft grimoires, and resolve battles on tight maps that reward positioning more than stat sponges, and the base game plus DLC are all discounted to match the season. 67% Off.
On the JRPG front, Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes finally hits a price that suits its big-cast, classic rhythm pitch.
The sale cut (65%) makes it easier to commit to a long run, and if you skipped Rising, there’s a discounted bundle to round out the set.
Still JRPG with Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth that lands a strong tactics-adjacent pick too, the turn-based street fights are punchy, the job system is playful, and at this discount (60%), you’re getting one of 2024’s meatiest RPGs for far less than launch. Both are clearly flagged as special promos ending with the Autumn sale, so, hurry up.
If you want one big-ticket JRPG that actually justifies the time investment, Metaphor: ReFantazio lands at 45% during the event.
Atlus’ fantasy world mixes dungeon crawling with party-building and encounters that reward planning instead of button mashing, and this discount lines up with broader roundups calling out the cut. If you’ve been waiting for a proper weeks-long RPG, this is it.
From there, move to something more classical in structure. Octopath Traveler II is down to $23.99 at 60% off, which is a comfortable entry point if you bounced off it at full price.
The HD-2D look still pops, and the layered jobs and latent powers keep battles snappy without losing the tactical read. There’s also a bundle with the first game and the sequel at a steep cut, useful if you want the complete tour before the newly announced prequel arrives. Either route, you’re paying well under “new game” money for hefty JRPGs.
If you’d prefer something irreverent that still plays like a proper tactical RPG, South Park: The Fractured But Whole hits an eyebrow-raising $2.99 at 90% off.
It’s easy to overlook because of the comedy, but the grid-based positioning, status combos, and party synergies hold up, and at this price, it’s a painless addition to the backlog, especially if you’re building a Steam Deck library.
Cap it with a stone-cold tactics classic: Tactics Ogre: Reborn is back at a sharp price (60% Off), and it still rewards patient positioning, formation planning, and smart class swaps more than brute force.
The game that’s always compared to it, Final Fantasy Tactics, just debuted not long ago, but with this discount you can grab both without having to choose.
