Bloodgrounds New Demo

Bloodgrounds has released a new 12-minute gameplay video with developer commentary that drills into what defines its gladiator tactics: high-risk turns, permanent losses, and a ruthless moment after the final blow where a single decision reshapes your run.

Bloodgrounds Combat System

Developed by Exordium Games and published by Daedalic Entertainment, the game blends grid-based arena battles with out-of-combat management and roguelite progression, and it’s building toward a 2025 launch on PC. A free demo is available now on Steam.

The footage focuses on tight, readable turn-based exchanges where positioning and ability timing do the heavy lifting.

Damage, status effects, and hazards stack fast, and a sloppy turn can snowball into a wipe. Those defeats sting because casualties are permanent. Lose a gladiator and you lose their gear and progress too.

That core “every death is final” setup is already front and center across the game’s materials and in the live demo, which lets players feel how brittle a winning formation can become after a single misplay.

Between fights, players manage a stable of gladiators and invest in Marevento, the coastal city that funds and frames the campaign.

Buildings unlock services, training, and upgrades that feed back into the next bout. The loop rewards careful roster planning: recruiting fresh blood, healing and leveling survivors, and balancing trauma and injuries against the pressure to keep climbing the tournament ladder.

Arena modifiers add another wrinkle. Burned sands, traps, and other rule-twisting conditions change how you approach each grid, while consumables and god-granted powers can bail you out or push a slim advantage into a clean win.

The crowd matters too. Please the audience, and you earn better rewards; play dirty in the underworld, and you can soften rivals before the fight. The systems are designed to push risk-taking without letting you forget the cost of failure.

The new video closes on the mechanic that gives the update its hook: mercy or murder. Under specific conditions, a defeated enemy gladiator can kneel.

Spare them and they can join your ranks; execute them and you win favor and resources. It’s not just flavor. The choice changes your roster composition, your economy, and your relationship with the crowd, nudging you toward either long-term growth or short-term gain.

In practical terms, the demo already shows the shape of a full run. You assemble teams across physical, ranged, and magical roles, combine class skills, and make hard cuts when injuries or losses pile up.

Each win feeds training and city upgrades; each loss ripples through morale and resources. It’s a familiar loop to fans of XCOM-style risk management and the bleak attrition of Battle Brothers, but framed by a tournament ladder and a revenge arc that climbs toward a mad Emperor.

If you want to see how those pieces fit under pressure, the demo is the best entry point right now. It highlights the tempo of fights, the snap decisions around hazards, and the weight behind each recruit or dismissal back in town.

Bloodgrounds is expected to be released before the end of 2025 on PC via Steam, below is the developer overview trailer.

More details about the game

Lead your team of Gladiators in turn-based arena battles, recruiting, training, and sometimes sacrificing them for glory. But remember, your Gladiators are mortal – If they fall in battle, they are lost forever… though their legacy will live on.

As a noble heir, you’ll manage your city by unlocking, constructing, and upgrading buildings that provide new services and mechanics to aid you on your bloody quest for vengeance.

You fought tooth and nail for survival, driven by a burning hatred and a thirst for justice. Now, as a wealthy patron and a gladiator trainer, you plot your revenge against the tyrannical Emperor who stole your freedom and murdered your father. But the path to redemption is fraught with peril, and you must navigate a treacherous world filled with deception and danger.

Recruit new allies and expand your gladiator team to climb the ranks of the brutal tournaments. Each victory brings you closer to the grand Capitol, where your ultimate target – the Emperor, lost in his madness – awaits on his throne.

Before each battle, assemble a team of gladiators from various classes: physical, ranged, or magical. Will you pay gold, duel them, or show mercy in the arena to recruit them?

Level them up, increase their stats, and learn new abilities to ensure they’re battle-ready. Don’t forget to address any negative statuses or traumas, and equip them with shiny new weapons, armor, and consumables.

Use powerful Deity abilities to aid your Gladiators in battle, or make a shady deal with a local crime lord to sabotage your enemies before the battle even begins.

Combat unfolds in turn-based battles on a grid, where units act in order of initiative. Strategically move your gladiators, attack, and position them to outsmart and outmaneuver your opponents.

Use your action points wisely – unleash powerful weapon or class abilities, make use of items like potions and magical scrolls, or set traps on the ground to catch enemies off guard.

Win the favor of the audience by fulfilling their bloodthirsty wishes and reap rewards after each battle. But beware – permadeath is on. If a gladiator falls, they and their equipment are lost forever, adding high stakes to every decision.

You’ve inherited an estate overlooking the desolate coastal city of Marevento, and the city’s future now rests in your hands.

Between battles, use your hard-earned gold to build and upgrade city buildings, unlocking new tools and services to aid you in your quest for vengeance. From the infirmary, where your gladiators can recover, to the bustling market for trading items, and even a grand monument to honor fallen gladiators.

Defeat each region’s Arena Champion to advance the age and access powerful new buildings and items.
Are you ready to rise to the challenge and carve your name into history?
