In just a few days, Larian Studios‘ much-anticipated Baldur’s Gate 3 will transition from early access to full release on PC on the 3rd of August 2023, with versions for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S soon to follow. Even as this milestone approaches, the studio is already setting its sights on the future – a future that likely includes a new entry in the Divinity: Original Sin series.
This confirmation comes directly from Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke in an interview with IGN. He expressed the team’s keen interest in returning to the Divinity series, but not before taking a well-deserved break to recharge and reignite their creative spark following the launch of Baldur’s Gate 3.
“Divinity: Original Sin is a universe we’ve crafted, and we’re absolutely committed to revisiting it at some point,” Vincke explained. “Our first task is to bring Baldur’s Gate 3 across the finish line, after which we’ll take a necessary pause to refresh our creative energies. We have a team of 400 dedicated developers pouring their heart and soul into these games. They represent the best of our team and their craft, making them truly remarkable.”
The Divinity series has played a crucial role in elevating Larian Studios to prominence within the gaming community. The studio launched this celebrated role-playing game series with Divine Divinity in 2002, followed by Beyond Divinity in 2004 and Divinity 2 in 2009.
The release of Divinity: Original Sin in 2014, a prequel to the main series, marked the beginning of a popularity surge for Larian Studios. The sequel, Divinity: Original Sin 2, catapulted the studio into the limelight, earning critical acclaim, an enthusiastic response from gamers, and selling millions of copies worldwide.
The success of the Divinity series paved the way for Larian to take on Baldur’s Gate 3, developed under license from Wizards of the Coast. This represents the studio’s most ambitious project to date. The game is set to launch on PC on August 3, on PS5 on September 6, and on Xbox Series X|S in the future.
