Shadow of the Road is definitely one of the titles that intrigues me the most, partly for its tactical combat system, but especially for that mix of steampunk, samurai, and magic. Plus, I’ve been following this game for a long time now, and finally, partly thanks to the backing of Owlcat Games as its publisher, this promising RPG from Another Angle Games finally seems to be turning into reality.

Shadow of the Road immerses players in an alternate-history Japan, where samurai traditions clash with emerging steampunk technology and supernatural forces. Set in 1868 during a brutal civil war, the game follows the conflict between the traditionalist Shōgun Tokugawa and the modernized army of Emperor Mutsuhito, supported by the British East Nippon Company. Players will lead a team of warriors, spies, and mystical beings in a richly detailed world where every decision shapes the course of history.
Each character brings unique abilities and personal motivations, influencing both battle outcomes and narrative choices. The game emphasize synergy between team members, allowing players to build their ideal squad to face mechanical constructs, yōkai, and other formidable foes.
While its release date is still to be announced, Shadow of the Road is gearing up for the Open Alpha demo, which will be available starting from the 25 of March 2025 on PC via Steam. Below the new trailer.
