The tactical RPG pairs squad tactics with a myth-fueled setting, and the demo is live now on PC via Steam.
Owlcat Games and Another Angle Games rolled out a fresh Shadow of the Road trailer during the New Game+ Showcase, locking in a 2026 release window for the turn-based tactical RPG. It frames a reimagined Bakumatsu-era Japan where industrial firepower and steampunk war machines emerge as the next tech tier, then immediately tip the balance of the conflict.

Shadow of the Road takes place during the final days of the Tokugawa Shogunate, with Emperor Mutsuhito’s supporters positioned as the rival force pushing the country toward a new order.
The pitch is pure genre mash, with Japanese myth bleeding into the ruleset, so the enemy roster is not just human factions. Yōkai share the stage with lethal constructs, which should push party comps toward flexible kits that can answer both supernatural threats and armored machinery.

The campaign hook follows a Tokugawa spymaster recruiting ronin Satoru and Akira to escort a boy with unstable powers, then expanding into a larger squad driven by personal motives. Choices are built as character route switches that can change relationship states, which matters when the combat layer is designed around a team whose bonds affect how encounters play out.
Each character brings a distinct ability set to the tactics layer, with the promise that personal goals and party dynamics will continue to influence the fight logic beyond raw loadouts. A demo is available now on Windows PC via Steam. The full game is planned for PC in 2026, with availability on Steam, the Epic Games Store, and GOG.
