And from Tokyo Game Show comes new content in the form of a gameplay trailer for one of the RPGs I was secretly hoping to see. It’s the highly inspired JRPG Threads of Time, in development at Riyu Games and published by Humble Games.

Until now, the game had only been shown through a handful of images and videos that never really detailed the game sequences. Now, with a new 90-second trailer, we get to see what the exploration and combat sequences are made of, and I must say, everything shown confirms the project’s quality.
Threads of Time is a modern 2.5D JRPG built in Unreal Engine 5, with hand-crafted 2D characters layered over richly lit 3D environments. A love letter to classic JRPGs, especially Chrono Trigger, featuring a time-travel narrative where characters from different eras must join forces for the good of the world.
The adventure jumps from a far-future, corporate-ruled city (2400 AD) to a Middle Ages ruled by sky-pirates (1000 AD) and a prehistoric land where Vikings and dinosaurs share the map (12,000,000 BC), tying those stops to the story of the long-dormant Time Knights and the conspiracy that unravels across centuries.
Combat centers on exposing defenses and bending time to trigger team combos, while era changes set enemy types, hazards, and quest hooks that fold back into the main plot. Here, you can find my article about the game, which includes a wealth of details.

The footage stitches together scenes across eras, introduces a new playable character, and underscores the game’s focus on chaining abilities and manipulating turn order to outsmart enemies.
The trailers feature part of the cast, including Rin, a kitsune ninja from the year 2400 AD, whose illusions and blade techniques disrupt the flow of battle.

It also tours Himmenheim, a prehistoric settlement where Vikings coexist with dinosaurs, before cutting back to a surveillance-drenched cyberpunk future.
On platforms, the game is confirmed for PC via Steam, with console versions planned; coverage around the TGS trailer notes consoles, including Xbox Series. No release date is yet available. Below is the new trailer.
