Developed by solo dev Ross McRitchie, Cairn: Mathair’s Curse blends Scottish folklore with the structure of a classic JRPG.
The story follows Alex, a young boy whose life changes after a cult awakens an ancient curse, pushing him into a journey that moves between everyday life and a dream realm that reveals darker truths.

The combat system is turn-based and structured around party management. Each character has distinct abilities, and battles reward coordination rather than repetition.
Standard attacks are supported by skills that consume limited resources, forcing decisions about when to conserve or spend power. Status effects such as poison, paralysis, and buffs are to be taken into account, and turn order can be influenced through certain moves, creating space for preemptive strategies.

Enemies are designed with quirks that make encounters unpredictable: animated stop signs, roaming haggis, and cultists with varied attack patterns all push players to adapt.
Outside of battle, progression relies on exploration and puzzles. Handcrafted areas inspired by the Scottish Highlands form the backbone of the world, from fishing villages to underground caverns and hidden laboratories.

Many of these locations contain environmental puzzles that block progress or hide optional rewards, giving exploration weight beyond narrative beats. The dream realm functions as a second layer, with distorted landscapes and surreal rules that alter how puzzles and combat encounters unfold, connecting story and gameplay more directly.
The presentation uses 2D pixel art to capture both the familiar and the surreal. Everyday settings aim for authenticity, while dream sequences are distorted and unsettling. A dynamic soundtrack shifts between exploration, battle, and emotional themes, grounding the game’s shifts in tone.
A demo is available and covers part of the first chapter, while the full release is planned across fourteen chapters. Cairn: Mathair’s Curse is expected to be released on PC via Steam on October 9, 2025.
