Approaching Infinity New RPG

Approaching Infinity has received its largest post-launch update yet, bringing a substantial batch of new features to the long-running sci-fi exploration RPG.

Approaching Infinity

The update adds two new unlockable ships, a new weapon type, optional meta progression, station assaults, and full controller support, while also setting up the launch of the next paid expansion, Approaching Infinity: Galactic Disasters.

Approaching Infinity is a sci-fi roguelike RPG developed by indie dev IBOL that mixes starship exploration, turn-based combat, away missions, trading, diplomacy, crew management, and procedural storytelling inside a large, open-ended galaxy.

Players choose a captain class, pick a ship, and then carve out their own run by exploring sectors, scanning planets, salvaging wrecks, taking contracts, dealing with alien factions, and surviving the many systems that can go wrong in deep space.

A big part of the game’s appeal is how many overlapping mechanics it tries to support at once. Ship builds, officer skills, faction relationships, and even away team decisions that can have long-term consequences for a run.

It can feel a bit like a traditional roguelike filtered through a space sim and a classic science fiction RPG, with a heavy focus on emergent situations. After more than a decade of development, the game has grown into a dense systems-driven experience with a strong replay loop, which is exactly why updates like this one can meaningfully change how each new run plays out.

Approaching Infinity

This latest patch expands Approaching Infinity, with new ways players can approach a run. The new ships offer more build variety, the Minelayer adds a different combat tool, and the new progression options give returning players extra rewards tied to past victories.

The Galactic Disasters DLC pushes things even further by introducing four separate challenge scenarios, each designed to pressure players in different ways and shake up the normal flow of exploration.

The developer also made it clear that support for the game is far from over. Even after 13 years of continued work on Approaching Infinity, this is not being framed as a final sendoff. More free updates are still planned, more DLC remains possible, and a new reimagining of the project is already being explored in parallel. You can find Approaching Infinity on PC via Steam.
