Beloved RPG Classics Return in Stunning HD-2D Visuals Across All Major Platforms in 2025
Square Enix has finally officially unveiled the first gameplay trailer for Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake during today’s Nintendo Direct, confirming the return of the genre-defining RPGs in a modernized form. Following the critically acclaimed Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, this new release will serve as a continuation of the Erdrick Trilogy, bringing full remakes of the original Dragon Quest and Dragon Quest II to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam and Microsoft Store later this year.
The new footage showcases the descendants of Erdrick as they journey through richly reimagined worlds rendered in Team Asano’s signature HD-2D style—a blend of pixel-art characters and dynamic 3D environments enhanced with high-definition effects. While fans who played last year’s DQIII remake will find narrative continuity, Square Enix emphasized that Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake can also be enjoyed as a standalone entry, making it accessible to both longtime players and newcomers.
This marks the sixth title created using the HD-2D engine, a visual style that has become a hallmark of modern retro-inspired RPGs. More details on the remake are expected in the coming months. In the meantime, players can revisit the beginning of the saga with Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, already available on all major platforms.
