Slay the Spire 2

If you’re looking for the driving force behind the explosive rise of deckbuilding mechanics and card-based gameplay in video games, look no further than this. Yes, it’s all thanks—or blame, depending on your perspective—to Slay the Spire. With its debut in 2017, the game achieved phenomenal success, inspiring countless developers to emulate its formula in various iterations, some more faithful than others. A few months ago, we reported that developer Mega Crit was working on the next chapter in the series, and today, we’ve got our first gameplay video.

Slay the Spire 2 Announced

Building upon the foundation of its predecessor, Slay the Spire II promises a reimagined experience that blends familiarity with innovation. Players will craft unique decks as they encounter strange creatures, discover powerful relics, and explore the mysteries hidden within the Spire. The story picks up a thousand years after the Spire’s doors last closed, inviting adventurers to delve into its evolving labyrinth and uncover long-forgotten truths.

A key highlight of the sequel is its expanded roster of “Slayers,” each bringing distinct sets of cards, mechanics, and playstyles. This addition introduces new archetypes to master, allowing for a greater variety of strategies to experiment with. Whether you opt for a risky approach or prefer to play conservatively, the ever-changing nature of the Spire ensures no two runs will feel alike. New enemies, unpredictable events, and treasures await, creating opportunities for both surprises and calculated tactics at every turn.

Mega Crit has completely rebuilt the game from the ground up, incorporating modern features, all-new visuals, and enhanced moddability through a new engine. This overhaul aims to deliver a smoother, more immersive experience while fostering a thriving community of modders and creators. Although specifics on some features remain under wraps, the trailer hints at fresh ways to play, teasing surprises that could redefine the roguelike deckbuilder genre.

Like the original, Slay the Spire II will debut in Early Access on PC via Steam in 2025. Below is an overview and Gameplay Trailer.

Coming to Early Access. Again!

Slay the Spire’s success comes from our community! It sounds corny, but the extra mile many of you went to report issues, translate content/announcements, create long video essays, make excellent (lol) tier lists, and draw goofy or gorgeous fan art is the reason we’re doing it all again. We love our job!
