The RPG Wallet Killer: 10+1 Excellent RPGs for Next to Nothing

Right on schedule as a Swiss watch, my Weekly RPG Wallet Killer is back, and once again it’s not in the least bit friendly to your wallet. There’s a fair few to choose from as normal. I do try to keep the rotation going as much as possible and will occasionally unearth a title that doesn’t go on sale all that often. This week I’ve put together 10+1 excellent RPGs that absolutely should be in your collection. If you don’t already have them, then this may be one of the very best times to pick them up with some discounts as high as 85%.

I start with Marvel’s Midnight Suns at 85% off for $8.99. Your options in battle are determined by your hero’s specific ability cards, and it’s all about positioning and environmental attacks to turn those options into a properly coordinated assault. In between missions, you’ve got the Abbey where you can spend time developing friendships and getting to know the people behind the masks. The draw is in the combination of the tactical encounters and the ongoing team story (saving the world still leaves space for a social life).

The supernatural theme continues in The Thaumaturge (now 70% off at $10.49). Wiktor Szulski’s supernatural ability is that he can perceive the emotions and secrets of others. He’s got salutors (folkloric creatures) to help him in turn-based combat and in his interactions with other people. The investigations and morally ambiguous choices that he makes give his powers a real purpose beyond just fighting. There’s also his own pride to deal with, which makes having access to other people’s weaknesses a rather delicate situation.

That whole issue of choice and consequence gets a lot more grim in LISA: The Painful (60% off to $7.99). It’s a post-apocalyptic experience which blends grim humor with party recruitment and choices that can have a permanent impact on your party members and your combat capabilities. The Definitive Edition currently available has extra campfire chat and a Painless mode for those who want to take a more lenient approach.

The Thaumaturge

Crown Trick changes at 75% off and $4.99. The dungeon denizens will react to your actions, giving you the time to assess a room before you make your next move. You have a variety of ways to deal with an encounter via weapons, skills, traps and elemental terrain, and the procedural generation means the situation will be different on each subsequent attempt. A very appealing option for those who like to focus on solving the immediate battlefield rather than going through a long campaign with a large cast of characters.

Take your time, it’s all right to do so; you’re still responsible for taking the wrong step. For that bigger campaign, Expeditions: Rome is 75% off at $11.24. You create a Roman Legatus and lead your companions through a story of military command and political intrigue, developing their skills and making equipment choices that will affect their options on the battlefield. The tactical encounters are interwoven with decisions about your legion and your position in the Republic.

Legends of the Round Table takes command in a rather more legendary form (currently at 50% off for $14.99). The world is presented through art which is very much in the style of illuminated manuscripts, with music drawn from the medieval period. Combat is very much in the form of mounted charges, duels, squires and permanent losses. There’s a lot of development of the knights, they age and they form relationships which have an effect on the group.

Gloomhaven at 72% off and $9.79 brings us back to cards again, just asking different questions to Midnight Suns. Each mercenary picks two ability cards per turn, using the top action of one and the bottom action of the other. Movement, attacks and initiative all have to be balanced against the need to have enough cards left to finish the scenario. There’s solo play and online co-op for up to 4 players as ways of going at the dungeons.

Getting everyone’s plans in sync might be a separate issue entirely. Rhythm comes in with Keylocker | Turn Based Cyberpunk Action at 40% off to $11.99. Singer B0B0 is a character who’s in rebellion against a society that has banned music altogether, using it as a means of attack and defense. You make your turn-based decisions which then lead into timed inputs (attacks, blocks and parries) and enemies appear in the world directly rather than via random encounters. That’s a much more hands-on take on planning your turn, following the careful card management of Gloomhaven.

Gameplay

Your strategy still counts of course, but your fingers have been given a job as well. The next stop is Lost Eidolons (80% off at $6.99) with Lost Eidolons: Veil of the Witch (50% off at $12.49). The original takes mercenary captain Eden into a rebellion and is a narrative campaign featuring grid-based combat, class progression, and camp relationships. Veil of the Witch is a standalone tactical roguelite which sees you send a 5-person squad across a cursed island on successive runs. Weapon pairings, elemental terrain and the ever-changing skill combinations make each run a different proposition.

I finish with Monster Hunter Stories at 67% off ($9.89), and one date to note: that offer expires on the 3rd of November. The first Stories adventure sees you as a Rider, hatching eggs and raising Monsties to fight with you. Power, Speed and Technical attacks all provide you with some interesting combinations to work with and Kinship abilities as well as monster development give you plenty to think about as your team develops.

Monster Hunter Stories Remastered

This PC version also features English and Japanese voice acting and a Museum Mode. I’d go with whichever kind of battle you actually want to play next, really. A discount can, of course, make the purchase a lot easier to justify, and it hasn’t added any more evenings to the week. Let me know which of those interests you. Ciao.
