Turn-based games have had a magnificent year in terms of new games, and there are many to look at; Old World, Songs of Conquest, and many other such titles. The Winter Sale begins on the 21st till January 5th! In this list, I will go over the titles you might have missed and that you should buy during the Steam Sale!
This is quite a hefty list, and these titles will all be discounted! Worth checking out! This is a mixture of fantasy and historical titles set in the turn-based genre.
Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous
One of the more recent fantasy RPG turn-based games that were recently released in 2020, this game ensures you have enough content to sink your teeth into for hundreds of hours. From the excellent writing to the fun and immersive gameplay, to the stunning graphics, this game is a treat. It’s also the sequel to Pathfinder Kingmaker; however, its story is separate from the event of the first game. Though I would think there are easter eggs here and there I do wish it would come on Xbox Game Pass to be playable on PC and Xbox Series X at some point.
I essentially note this because you are able to play Owlcat’s previous excellent RPG entries, such as Pillars of Eternity and Divinity Original Sin II, on Xbox Game Pass. Nevertheless, you will have a blast playing this game, and is a sure-fire winner on the Steam Winter Sale if you like swords, dragons, demons, and fantasy!
Old World
Old World is a fantastic entry into the 4x genre, and it was an Epic Exclusive for over two years, and now it has recently been released on Steam! The new DLC, Heroes of the Aegean introduces the player to the era of the Peloponnesian Wars. Old World is exclusively set in the Ancient World, allowing you to choose from a variety of historical civilizations such as the Romans, the Egyptians, the Babylonians, and many more! It is made by the former developers of Civilisation 5 so you are in for a treat!
Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate Daemonhunters
Recently released, the Warhammer 40k universe in the world of gaming is having a golden age. In this game, you lead the Grey Knights, the very hope of humanity against Chaos. Of course, Chaos is always the big baddie in this universe, and if you wish to crush more of the evil brethren of this horrendous cult, then by all means this game is for you. This game is described as a brutal, fast-paced turn-based tactical RPG. You will root out a horrific plot to infect the galaxy with the Bloom, a cosmic plague that rots worlds into oblivion. This seems like an excellent game to get into, and I would wholeheartedly get this game right now for your Winter Sale Purchase!
Disciple Liberations
This is another great fantasy RPG title set in the dark fantasy genre, combined with strategy and turn-based combat. You play a hero that is to liberate the land of Nevendaar and find out what secrets these fabled lands hold. Every decision you make will have a consequence, and well, we wouldn’t want to end up making the wrong decision now, would we? We have extremism of the cults of evil, the dark forces of the Undead, and we need to assemble a team that will help us in defeating these brutal beasts. It has an 80 hr campaign + 270 written quests. Quite a lot to play through! This is a wonderful game, and a great YouTuber, Brought to Bear, has covered this game here in his fantastic live stream:
Eador: Masters of the Broken World
Eador: Masters of the Broken World is a standalone expansion in the wonderful fantasy series of Eador. One cannot think but if this title had been released around the early 2000s when Age of Empires was popular, it would have been made famous by then. That being said, the universe of Eador is such that it is made out of thousands of countless shards of land drifting in the Great Nothing. These shards are inhabited by little worlds of their own, where the power over these very shards by contested by Masters, immortal beings who see themselves as Gods.
In this game, you take the role of the Mighty Master and shape the dynasty of Eador! There is a balanced fusion of grand strategy, turn-based tactics, roleplaying strategy, a non-linear story, and an original fantasy world. This is a gem of a game that you need to get.

Urtuk: The Desolation
Urturk: The Next Desolation is set in a low-dark fantasy world where giants once ruled it, and now it is a grim-dark world where pain, misery, and an overall depressing atmosphere rule the world. It is a survival RPG with turn-based mechanics, a tactically rich battle map, with choices. You are able to run your enemies into environmental hazards or worse. But don’t expect any of the traditional fantasy monsters or creatures to be in there! This is a game well worth checking out!
Vagrus the Riven Realms
Vagrus – The Riven Realms is an incredibly dense world full of fantasy inspired by Ancient Rome, it is cruel, relentless, and difficult. There is a free prologue to check out as well! More information is here:
Vagrus – The Riven Realms: Prologue is an early Demo to Vagrus – The Riven Realms, made up of two parts:
- The first section of the standalone story ‘Pilgrims of the Wasteland’, is also the tutorial of the game.
- A taste of the Open-World main campaign with character creation and the first twenty-five turns to play.
The Demo has about 3-5 hours of playable content (depending on playstyle).
The game is simple at heart: You play a vagrus, a cavaran leader that is going on quests, to make money, and to explore the world. The Empire that once ruled the world is long gone, and the Elder Gods unleashed this chaos upon the Empire. You are exploring a desolate land, imagine Mad Max in an Ancient Roman setting. It combines a turn-based strategy emphasis, with your companions helping you fight against monsters/beasts/cutthroats and more! There are factions to ally with, strange factions, wonderful locations, and a vast array of characters. This game has a completionist playstyle of 300+ hours. So if this is the game for you, then go and purchase this game!
Wartales
Wartales was one of the most anticipated titles in the RPG/strategy genre. It has a vast open world, a massive medieval universe, where you are able to explore the world, recruit companions and lead them on quests to collect bounties, and unravel the secrets of the tombs of the ancients. While the Edoran Empire has fallen, you have to navigate through this turmoil and uncertainty, doing mercenary work, and thievery, but civilization has collapsed for all we know.
Combat, war, battle, and a thirst for riches shape and define your day-to-day life. You are ordinary, but you can make your way through this world. There are plenty of quests, and tons of campaign hours to play with and the game is in early access so you can definitely give your feedback to the devs! This is well worth buying! This is for players that liked Xcom, and Battle Brothers!
Expeditions: Rome
Expeditions Rome is one of those rare turn-based RPGs that we get in the setting of Ancient Rome. There are so many good settings of Roman History and I am glad THQ Nordic decided to publish this game made by the wonderful developers at Logic Artists. You play a young Legatus, taking on the path to escape Rome and cement your legacy while finding out what happened to your father. You play turn-based tactics, fight in battles, take on quests and raise your legions.
You go through the rich environment of Greece, Egypt, Gaul, and many other such places, even going to Rome itself. This game is underrated, and I feel it vastly needs more attention! So get this game now!
Hard West II
Journey to the heart of darkness in the Wild West, as you deal with it’s will mythology, and you and your companion of outlaws will outwit, engage in heists, rob, and loot your way. This is a game where you will outgun your enemies in this turn-based tactics game. Nothing is as it seems. Definitely a game worth getting!
