The upcoming Steam demo will introduce the RPG’s new prologue, three playable heroes, tactical battles, and the opening section of Act 1.
Players curious about Starfinder: Afterlight will soon have an opportunity to experience the science-fiction RPG for themselves. Developer Epictellers Entertainment has announced that a public demo will be released on Steam on September 10, 2026, offering an early look at the beginning of the adventure ahead of the game’s planned Early Access debut in Q4 2026.
The demo will cover the complete prologue and continue into the first portion of Act 1. Epictellers estimates that the available content will take approximately one to two hours to complete, although the exact length will naturally depend on how thoroughly players explore and engage with conversations.
A New Beginning for the Afterlight Crew
The experience opens with a newly introduced prologue set before the party reaches Akiton. Players must survive an attack by the Corpse Fleet, providing an immediate introduction to the setting, its dangers, and the game’s turn-based combat system.

From there, the demo moves into the opening stretch of Act 1, combining exploration, dialogue choices, and tactical encounters. It will also introduce three important members of the future crew: Kole, Preach, and Sterling, giving players a first taste of the personalities and relationships that will shape the wider campaign.
The demo will offer three pre-generated protagonists. Players can choose between a Vesk Envoy, a Human Soldier, and a Shirren Operative, with each option providing a different approach to conversations and combat.
Several progression features will remain unavailable in this particular build. Character creation, merchants, and leveling will not be included, although all three systems are expected to appear when Starfinder: Afterlight enters Early Access.
The demo also lacks controller support, meaning it must be played with a mouse and keyboard. Players who encounter problems or want to share their thoughts can open the built-in feedback tool by pressing F1.
What Has Changed Since the Earlier Beta?
The September demo is not simply a repackaged version of the previous testing build. Epictellers has continued refining the opening hours, with the new prologue and tutorial among the most noticeable additions.

Menus and other interface elements have received another user-experience pass, while combat now features additional animations and most of the planned Level 1 abilities. The developers have also worked on camera behavior, environmental occlusion, performance, and customizable keybindings.
Taken together, the listed changes suggest that the demo should provide a more polished and representative introduction to the game than the earlier beta.
What Is Starfinder: Afterlight?
Starfinder: Afterlight is a single-player, party-based RPG set within Paizo’s science-fantasy universe. Its story follows a newly assembled crew searching for its missing captain while confronting a threat that could place the wider galaxy in danger.

Combat uses a tactical three-action system, allowing characters to combine movement, attacks, abilities, and support actions during each turn. Outside battle, players will recruit companions, develop relationships, explore different locations, and make decisions capable of changing how parts of the story unfold. The complete game is expected to feature six recruitable companions.
The initial Early Access version is currently planned to contain Act 1, representing roughly ten hours of gameplay and progression from Levels 1 to 3.
It will also introduce the first version of the character creator, along with a broader selection of systems than those available in the demo. The finished campaign is targeting approximately 40 to 60 hours of content, although those plans may evolve as development continues.
The Starfinder: Afterlight demo will be available through Steam beginning September 10, 2026, giving a focused introduction to its story, companions, and tactical combat before Early Access begins later in the year.
