The game I’m introducing today features some of the best pixel art seen in recent times.
AfterQuest, an upcoming retro-inspired turn-based RPG developed and published by Ember Arcade, presents a unique take on the fantasy genre by exploring the aftermath of a hero’s adventure. Set in the world of Fanterra, the game raises an intriguing question: what happens when legendary heroes defeat the Dark Lord but leave all the side quests unfinished?

The premise revolves around a world where, despite the heroes’ victory, many of Fanterra’s inhabitants are still struggling. Villagers are searching for lost loved ones, shopkeepers wonder about their stolen relics, and farmers face failing crops. Some even whisper that the Dark Lord may have returned. With the original heroes long gone, it falls upon a new generation of adventurers to pick up the pieces and complete the unfinished quests.
AfterQuest’s gameplay features fast-paced turn-based combat designed to be fluid and responsive. Unlike traditional RPGs that rely on extensive menus, AfterQuest employs an ARPG-style interface, allowing for instant actions without the need for navigation through complex options. The game incorporates beautifully animated spells and attacks and a variety of abilities, elemental interactions, status effects, gear, and consumables to overcome challenges.

Beyond combat, customization plays a significant role in AfterQuest. Between missions, players can return to their camp to level up characters, equip new gear, and modify skills and perks. The game also includes a crafting system where adventurers can combine ingredients found during their journeys to create powerful consumables.
Quests in AfterQuest work like classic dungeon crawlers, with each step revealing potential surprises—be it enemy encounters, hidden treasures, or unexpected story elements. Every mission carries its own narrative, allowing players to uncover mysteries such as the fate of missing villagers or the true purpose behind stolen relics that were once dismissed.
AfterQuest does not yet have a release date, below you can find an overview via Steam, screens and trailer.

About This Game
Welcome to Fanterra, your typical fantasy world. Legendary heroes defeated The Dark Lord but boy were they in a hurry. During their epic run through the campaign, not a single side quest was completed.
While many cheered his downfall, townsfolk, shopkeepers, and farmers were left waiting for news of lost loved ones, stolen relics, and failing crops. Some even whisper the Dark Lord has respawned.
With the heroes gone, perhaps it’s time for ordinary adventurers to finish the job.
