That said, today—albeit with a few days’ delay—I wanted to point out that Coatsink has officially launched Augmented Empire on PC, bringing the VR-exclusive tactical RPG to a wider audience with a new flatscreen version.
Now available on Steam with a 15% launch discount until April 26, this re-release gives players the chance to experience the game’s rich cyberpunk narrative and tactical gameplay without the need for a VR headset. The title features an all-star voice cast, including Kate Mulgrew (Star Trek: Voyager), Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead), and Garrick Hagon (Star Wars: A New Hope), lending gravitas to the story-driven experience.
Set in the dystopian city of New Savannah in 2058, Augmented Empire invites players into a class-divided world where social ranking dictates quality of life. Players assume the role of a once model citizen who is forced into rebellion, leading a team of outcasts and criminals in a quest to dismantle the city’s corrupt social order. The game blends narrative with classic turn-based RPG mechanics, allowing players to unlock and upgrade character abilities as they explore diverse environments and engage in tactical combat.
Originally developed for the Oculus Gear VR, Augmented Empire was praised for its storytelling and innovative use of virtual reality. According to Coatsink programmer Tom Elliott, the journey to PC was unexpected. “The VR community has been screaming for years for a re-master of Augmented Empire,” he said. “While we were working on a VR port to Meta Quest, we curiously decided to see how the game would feel in a more traditional format.” That curiosity has now resulted in a fully reworked version for PC, broadening access to a hidden gem of the VR era.
