I put Dungeon Overdose in my Party-Based RPG Fest roundup and I thought it deserved a bit more space to explain its rather odd progression. It’s an RPG which encourages you to push your party towards magical overload in the hope that it will make it stronger. Straightforward adventuring wasn’t really on the design brief apparently.

This is a roguelike RPG from SHIGEFUSA.WORKS featuring side-view exploration and turn-based battles. The appeal is in the interplay between dangerous abilities, the unexpected awakenings and the party as it evolves throughout the expedition.

Managing Magical Overload

The core mechanic is OD% (Overdose Rate). The higher your OD%, the greater the risk and the more likely you are to trigger KAIGN. That in itself is a very compelling loop to get caught in: do you push a little harder in the hope of getting some growth, or do you just keep things under control?

KAIGN can provide permanent boosts to a character’s abilities. You can have those awakenings without any experience points at all or any conventional character levels. The decision on how much risk you’re willing to take in order to get another opportunity to develop the party is the key one.

Steam also has OVER KAIGN, which is a massive burst of power associated with pushing your OD% to the absolute limit. The finer details are only just touched on but it does fit with a combat system that encourages you to play right up to the edge.

Choosing Companions and Developing a Build

Each adventure starts with a fixed PC and a partner picked at the tavern. You can then have additional companions show up during your dungeon crawls, which gives you your initial selection before chance takes over for the rest of the party.

The announced list is 11 jobs: Mage, Knight, Priest, Martial Artist, Hunter, Merchant, Nurse, Jester, Samurai, Dancer and Shaman.

You can start with a particular approach in mind and then modify that around whoever actually shows up later. The dungeon itself is different each time (layout, enemies, items available, etc.), so there are plenty of reasons to reconsider your approach to an expedition.

Collectible cards provide another avenue for building up your party and the dev confirms that cards can be fused. Rare equipment and limit break mechanics further expand the ways in which you can grow your party.

There’s also UMINAOSHI, the rebirth mechanism which comes in as the next step on from the point at which you’ve hit the limits of growth. It enables a second start without going all the way back to zero. The exact nature of what carries over in that process has not yet been fully elucidated.

Making Every Awakening Feel Like an Event

Dungeon Overdose‘s presentation is very much in keeping with the ‘unsettling’ aesthetic of the systems. Music is provided by MARETU who also contributes to the soundtrack and is in charge of monster design. The musician has spoken of a retro game music approach, and SHIGEFUSA has confirmed that both the exploration and battle tracks vary from dungeon to dungeon.

The awakenings themselves are designed to make a scene. In a July dev update, SHIGEFUSA described the synchronization of character cut-ins, voices, SFX and VFX when KAIGN activates. The reference given was the excitement of a pachinko machine, which goes some way to explaining the emphasis on turning that unpredictable breakthrough into a big audio/visual payoff.

The dev also confirm using AI generated content for part of the map tiles.

Release Window and Playable Demo

English support was announced for the September demo update, along with new systems and UI changes. Dungeon Overdose is currently targeting Q4 2026 for Windows PC (via Steam). The free demo covers the first dungeon layer and its boss, with no save carryover into the full release. Both the demo and the wishlist are available on the Steam page.
