Shinra Software’s upcoming turn-based adventure strands a cargo crew and its pirate attackers on a hostile world trapped beneath an unmoving sun.
In most RPGs, becoming infected by an alien parasite would be a problem to solve. In Stillsun Ark, the game I’m going to show you today, it could be the only reason the stranded cast survives. I just learned about it, and it looks astonishing in its pixel art, so I decided to put all the scarce information available so far together here.
Developed and published by Shinra Software (its name already gives a clear idea of its inspirations and origins), Stillsun Ark is an upcoming pixel-art JRPG that combines traditional turn-based battles with science-fiction survival, psychological storytelling, and a transformation mechanic known as the SHIFT system.
Enemies Forced to Survive Together
The story begins with a confrontation in space. A cargo ship comes under attack from pirates, and both vessels crash onto the same unknown planet, leaving cargo workers, criminals, former enemies, and complete strangers trapped together.

Their new home is a tidally locked world, meaning its sun remains fixed in the sky rather than following a familiar day-and-night cycle. It is an environment filled with striking alien life, but its beauty hides a biosphere capable of killing, or changing, those who enter it.
With no immediate means of escape, the survivors must put their earlier conflict aside, explore the planet, and find a way to engineer their return home. That setup should give the story room to explore more than environmental survival. The party is not a conventional group of heroes united by a shared purpose; it is a collection of people who may have been trying to kill one another shortly before the crash.
The SHIFT System Turns Infection Into a Weapon
Alien parasites play a central role in both the narrative and combat. These organisms bond with the survivors’ bodies and minds, granting them new abilities and allowing them to assume different forms.
These transformations power the game’s SHIFT system. During turn-based encounters, characters can change forms to gain the tools needed for a particular situation, exploit an enemy’s vulnerabilities, and respond when the battle begins moving against them.

The first published battle image shows a familiar command-based foundation beneath that mechanic. Party members have HP and MP, while available actions include Attack, Skills, Items, and Defend.
A vertical column along the side of the screen display the upcoming turn order, giving players information that may help them decide when to attack, protect a vulnerable ally, or activate a different form.
Several important details remain undisclosed, including how transformations are unlocked, whether parasites can be developed along separate progression paths, and how frequently characters can shift during an encounter. Even so, building the battle system around changing forms gives Stillsun Ark an identity beyond its more traditional JRPG commands.
A Planet That Attacks the Mind
The survivors will not only be fighting physical threats. According to the game’s description, the planet can influence the mind, producing hallucinations and places where reality itself appears unstable.

These experiences force individual characters to confront guilt, previous failures, loss, and memories they have attempted to suppress. That psychological element could connect character development directly to exploration, with different areas of the planet reflecting the emotional burdens carried by the crew.
Stillsun Ark will also include mild body-horror imagery associated with parasitic infection and transformation. The developer describes the violence as stylized through pixel art, with occasional blood but no realistic gore. Its darker material is intended to remain atmospheric rather than graphic, covering themes such as survival, grief, guilt, and self-reflection.
Detailed Pixel Art and an Unusual Heroic Weapon
Visually, Stillsun Ark uses detailed pixel art to create a vibrant but unnatural ecosystem. The early material shows enormous plants, crystalline formations, oversized fungi, and unfamiliar animals occupying battlefields dense with environmental detail.

One of the characters shown so far is Aman, who carries a wrench large enough to function as a full-sized melee weapon. Shinra Software has confirmed that the oversized tool belongs to the main character, suggesting that the cast may rely on practical equipment salvaged from their former lives rather than conventional fantasy swords and spears.
The team has also acknowledged Breath of Fire IV as one of the game’s visual inspirations in its character presentation and colorful environments. Dialogue will primarily be delivered through written text, maintaining the feel of older story-driven JRPGs.
A Promising New Sci-Fi JRPG to Watch
Stillsun Ark is still at an early stage of its public reveal. Shinra Software has not announced a launch date, and several fundamental systems, including character progression, party management, exploration structure, and the full rules behind SHIFT, have yet to be explained. For now, you can wishlist it on Pc via Steam.
