The game I’m going to introduce today is Seasons of Solitude, a small, quiet kind of strategy game. No bombast, no base-building sprawl. Just you, a harsh prehistoric landscape inspired by Estonian nature and myth, and a set of rules that punish lazy decisions.

Developed by indie dev Ninjarithm, it is currently listed as Coming soon on PC with an open playtest available for those who want to see how its ideas work in practice and a demo on the horizon.
Players step into the role of an exile facing the Elder’s trials, acting through two pieces on the board: the Exile and their Echo.

Every map is built from hand-painted hex tiles. You reveal the land, read what each tile can offer, and choose when to harvest, when to move on, and when to leave something alone so the ground does not collapse into useless dust.
Food, water, and materials are limited, and every action eats into that safety margin. Nothing is automatic, and that is the point.

What makes Seasons of Solitude interesting is how stubborn the game is about remembering what you do. Overuse of an area results in a drop in yields. Push a route too hard and you make life harder for yourself later.
Seasons roll in and change what is available and how far you can realistically travel. Wildlife and hazards are not flavour text. They compete for the same resources or block the paths you were relying on, forcing you to adjust instead of repeating a solved pattern.

Trials are handcrafted, framed more like tactical puzzles than a loose survival sandbox. You look for efficient paths, route your two avatars to support each other, and unlock tools that let you repair worn tiles, manipulate cycles, or squeeze a bit more value from a struggling region.
Runs are short enough that failures feel like feedback, and the visual style is clean and calm, focused on legibility, which fits the measured pace.

Recent playtest updates suggest the team is still tuning core systems, including how combos and the “two-pawn” idea sit at the center of each trial.
If you enjoy turn-based strategy where every move has weight and the map slowly pushes back against greedy play, Seasons of Solitude is worth keeping an eye on, not as a headline act, but as one of those focused projects that quietly earn a place on tactics players’ lists. No release date for now. Here is the Steam page, and below is the reveal trailer and more details.
DETAILS ABOUT THE GAME
Face the Elder’s Trials
Seasons of Solitude is a turn-based survival strategy set in a prehistoric world inspired by Estonian nature and myth. You are in exile, acting through two versions of yourself: the Exile and their Echo. Together, you must read the land, plan your routes, and keep its fragile balance as shifting seasons reshape every move.
Plan the Unknown: Every trial starts in unfamiliar land. Planning means knowing what each tile can offer, when to gather, and when to leave resources untouched to ease the land’s strain. Position yourself to trigger powerful combos that reward efficient land use. Reshape tiles into new states and leaving a lasting mark on the world.
Gather With Purpose: Food, water, and materials are never guaranteed. Tiles deplete and return in new forms, letting you learn how the land cycles. Push too hard and they slip into barren grassland, weakening yields and straining their local area. Restore worn ground to keep the cycle flowing. Seasons add pressure, limiting what you can gather and when. Survival is a balance of staying alive, progressing your tools, and protecting the land that sustains you.
Secure Your Gains: Your hard-won resources are never safe. Animals claim what they need, consuming food and water you worked to grow. Stop them too often and they starve, leaving tiles depleted. Hazards strike struggling areas, blocking access but opening new ways to interact through tools. Protect what matters, allow what must flow, and decide what you are willing to lose.
Adapt and Evolve: The land is never fixed. Local areas shift in size and strength depending on how you use them. Grow a area for greater rewards or keep it small to limit risk. Isolated bubbles can thrive, but collapse quickly if neglected. Every area feeds into the global land-state, raising or lowering the world’s overall resilience. Tools let you shape your strategy: restore barren ground, bypass renewal cycles, convert materials into land tokens, trap over-eager animals for food, or exploit hazards to gain rare resources. Seasons tighten, pressures rise, and your survival depends on how well you read the land and shape it to your plan.
