Astral Throne II Announced

Honestly, the first game was quite an original SRPG bringing in roguelite mechanics, and today, Zero Sun Games has officially announced Astral Throne II: Age of the Phoenix, a new entry set in the same universe as Astral Throne that functions as both sequel and prequel, and as a structural reboot of their strategy RPG roguelite idea.

The announcement explains that many of the team’s bigger ideas for post-launch updates would have effectively reshaped the original too heavily, so they chose instead to build a new game on a new foundation rather than overwrite what players already have.

Astral Throne II: Age of the Phoenix leans further into the roguelite structure while keeping the focus on tight, turn-based tactical encounters and avoiding any reliance on grindy stat inflation.

Runs are being redesigned to be shorter and sharper, shifting from a three-act structure to single-act runs on smaller maps with fewer units on the field. The goal is faster iteration, clearer stakes, and a stronger sense of long-term progression driven by metaprogression, without turning success into a matter of raw grind.

The sequel moves away from the fully 3D low-poly look of the first game to a hybrid 2D-3D pixel art style. According to the announcement, this shift better fits genre expectations and makes it easier to create characters, maps, and animations at the pace they want.

Alongside the visual overhaul comes a full UI rebuild with controller-first design, addressing a clear weak point of the original, which was built mouse-first and only adapted to gamepads later.

One of the stated targets is to move from “Playable” to Steam Deck Verified at launch, which suggests proper navigation, readable text, and more considered input support from day one.

This new structure is also what lets them lean harder into metaprogression without losing control over balance. With single-act runs and tighter battlefields, every attempt becomes a smaller tactical puzzle that feeds into broader unlocks, experiments, and story progression.

The announcement notes that metaprogression will support more variety between runs and a clearer long-term arc, but with explicit care not to undermine the strategy layer.

Age of the Phoenix’s story is being written by award-winning fantasy author Shami Stovall, a writer with a background across traditional fantasy, urban fantasy, and LitRPG, and a genuine SRPG fan according to the devs.

The new game is a prequel set earlier in the Astral Throne timeline, with a more linear story structure that progresses in tandem with the game’s metaprogression. Between attempts, players will see relationship-style scenes and conversations that resemble a support system, giving space to build bonds and context around the cast while keeping the run-level tactics focused.

A Steam demo for Astral Throne II: Age of the Phoenix is planned for the first quarter of 2026, with the store page already live for PC wishlisting. Below is the announcement trailer.
