Southern Lights: Broken Frequency Overview

An Antarctic research station cannot repair every damaged system, protect every exhausted crew member, and investigate an unknown phenomenon at the same time. Southern Lights: Broken Frequency builds its strategy around that conflict, forcing the player to decide which problems deserve immediate attention and which risks must be accepted.

Developed and published by Glynos Interactive, this strategy game is scheduled to launch for PC on November 1, 2026. A playable Steam demo is planned for October 1, giving players one month to examine its crew-management and survival systems before release.

Southern Lights Overview

The story follows a team of scientists and explorers stationed in a remote part of Antarctica.

Their expedition initially searches for rare resources and potentially important scientific discoveries, but digging beneath the ice leads them to something that should have remained buried. After an experiment involving an unusual energy source, the station loses contact with the outside world, and its remaining crew becomes trapped with an escalating cosmic threat.

Every Turn Creates a New Priority

The strategy layer centers on managing the entire station. Each turn requires the player to distribute limited resources, repair damaged facilities, maintain life-support systems, continue research, and respond to unexpected emergencies.

Strategy Layer

Neglected problems can develop into additional crises. Delaying a repair may preserve supplies for another task, but it can also cause a critical system to fail later. Continuing an experiment could produce a necessary breakthrough while leaving the station vulnerable elsewhere. In extreme situations, parts of the base can be sacrificed to protect what remains.

Time therefore functions as another limited resource. The player may understand how to solve several problems but lack the personnel and materials required to address them all during the same turn. The central challenge is deciding which consequences the station can survive.

This also distinguishes Southern Lights from turn-based games built primarily around combat encounters. The currently disclosed mechanics place more emphasis on triage, personnel assignments, facility management, and long-term risk. Its tactical decisions concern where the crew works and what the station abandons, not simply which enemy should be attacked first.

Specialists Can Be Developed, Exhausted, or Broken

The station is operated by a team of specialists with different abilities, personalities, strengths, weaknesses, and levels of resilience. Assigning the appropriate crew member to a task can improve the station’s chances, but repeatedly depending on the same specialist carries its own cost.

Souther Lights Specialists

Physical health is only one condition to monitor. Crew members also have sanity to manage, connecting the psychological-horror premise directly to the strategy systems. Someone may remain physically capable of working while becoming increasingly unstable under prolonged isolation, exhaustion, or exposure to the phenomenon.

Specialists can be customized through perks, adding a character-building layer to each run. This creates a relationship between immediate assignments and long-term development. Pushing an important engineer or scientist beyond their limits might resolve the current emergency, but it could also weaken a specialist.

Research May Be Necessary, but It Is Not Safe

Scientific research acts as a progression system and a source of narrative information. Each breakthrough improves the crew’s understanding of the phenomenon and brings them closer to discovering what happened at the station.

Fatigue To Face

However, the original experiment is also connected to the crisis. Researching the phenomenon means continuing to interact with the same force threatening the base, creating tension between scientific progress and basic survival. Time spent investigating the unknown is time that cannot be used to stabilize failing infrastructure or protect exhausted personnel.

Dynamic events are intended to change the problems faced during different playthroughs, while alternative perk choices and team builds allow the station to be managed through different strategies.
