Stormbinders Overview

It feels like there’s a full-on rush to revive classic strategy games in the vein of Heroes of Might and Magic. Honestly, I’m starting to lose count of all the new iterations inspired by the legendary ’90s series. Just think of last year’s excellent Songs of Conquest, or other titles like Sirens of the Silence, Pennon and Battle, and the recently announced Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era, which is even closer in spirit and lineage to the original and is currently in development.

Now, there’s another contender to add to the list—one that looks genuinely inspired, promising, and features unique gameplay mechanics tied to dynamic weather systems. It’s called Stormbinders, developed by Destructive Creations, and was just announced a few hours ago by publisher Slitherine. Set to release on PC later this year, Stormbinders blends the golden-age spirit of classic strategy titles like Heroes of Might and Magic with modern innovations, notably a dynamic, randomized weather system that reshapes both the battlefield and the map at every playthrough.

The game features traditional hex-based tactical battles, intuitive controls, and deep strategic layers including realm management, exploration, and castle sieges. Players must adapt to ever-shifting magical storms, adjusting their army compositions and spellcasting tactics accordingly. At launch, Stormbinders will offer four distinct factions, a roster of 72 units, and a mix of single-player and multiplayer challenges inspired by 4X gameplay principles.

“After the remakes of Master of Magic and Fantasy General, we are honored to pay tribute to such an iconic franchise in the history of strategy games with Stormbinders,” said Marco Alessandro Minoli, Director of Publishing at Slitherine.

At this link, you can find the official showcase, while at the Steam page, you can wishlist the game. Below is an overview, screens, and announcement trailer.

Stormbinders is a turn-based strategy game that immerses players in a world shattered by the breaking of the magical weave. Once a land of harmony, it now teeters on the brink of destruction where chaos has been unleashed, pitting powerful factions against one another.

Who will bring balance back and forge a new destiny for the world?

During the epic single-player campaign, players can choose their hero and seal the fate of their kingdoms. The story progresses across unique scenarios, uncovering a tale of magic, heroism, unlikely alliances and betrayals.

Stormbinders’ unique and randomized storm system adds a new layer of strategy to every battle. Each time the game is launched, the weather patterns shift both in the global map and on the battlefield, putting the players in front of new challenges every time.

Strategy & Conquest: the hero can ride through the global map to fight enemies and collect new resources.Castle management: the gathered resources can be used to upgrade the buildings in the players realm, recruit forces and expand their power.

Different factions: each faction has its own rules and distinct abilities that can consistently alter the gameplay.

Combats unfold on a classic hexagonal battlefield with an orthographic camera. Success depends on the composition of the armies, their positioning and the ability to cast strong spells against considering the enemy’s strengths and weaknesses.

Each faction has more than 18 unique units, including legendary heroes, wise spellcasters and mystical creatures. Players can customize their armies, mixing different types of units to strategically create powerful synergies of abilities.
