Turn-Based Games on Xbox Game Pass – 2022 – Part 1

Written by Charlie Norris

Lists

Like any other subscription service, Game Pass has an ever-rotating selection of great games. So, if you read my previous list from six months ago, then you should know that it required some serious updates. As games were added and removed, it eventually became obsolete. But, if you are a turn-based lover and a Game Pass subscriber, don’t worry. This is the new version of that list, containing games available as of June 8.

Astria Ascending

Astria Ascending is a hand-drawn, side-scrolling turn-based RPG from the same creators behind Final Fantasy games and Bravely Default. In Astria Ascending, players will pick from a cast of eight customizable characters while exploring the world of Orcanon. It contains over 50 hours of gameplay, telling a story of fate and sacrifice, with mini-games galore in classic RPG fashion.

Astria Ascending is available for both Xbox and PC, on Game Pass. If you want to know more, you can check out our Astria Ascending tips & review.

Battletech

Battletech is a turn-based combat game with mechs. Players control a mercenary company full of mechs and their pilots, who must complete contracts to stay afloat. It features large battle maps with over 30 BattleMechs to choose from.

Battletech is available for PC, on Game Pass. Check out our Battletech review.

The Bard’s Tale Trilogy

The Bard’s Tale Trilogy is as old-school as a game can get – with grid-based movement included. This remastered version includes everything players loved with quality-of-life improvements.

The Bard’s Tale Trilogy is available on Xbox and PC, on Game Pass.

The Bard’s Tale IV

The Bard's Tale IV

The successor to the popular trilogy returns to its roots, after going real-time. So, if you enjoyed the trilogy – this is much the same, but better visuals and updated gameplay.

Available on Xbox and PC, on Game Pass. Here is our take on Bard’s Tale IV.

Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling

Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling follows the adventures of three heroes as they embark on an epic journey in a Paper Mario-style world. Clearly taking inspiration from the popular series, Bug Fables’ battles play the same way, with every action featuring commands that enhance the damage, when performed correctly.

Bug Fables is available on both Xbox and PC.

Costume Quest 2

Costume Quest 2 is a short turn-based RPG set during Halloween in a small town. The basic premise is taking what people love about Halloween (dressing up) and turning it into a superpower. As such, each costume gives the characters different abilities to use during turn-based battles.

Costume Quest 2 is available on Xbox, on Game Pass.

Cris Tales

Cris Tales is a beautiful indie RPG with a unique perspective. In Cris Tales, players will be trying to change the future while acting in the present and seeing the past – as it all happens on the one screen. Playing as a Time Mage, players will employ the different timelines to their advantage in order to stop the Time Empress.

Cris Tales is available on Xbox and PC – on Game Pass. Check out our Cris Tales review.

Crown Trick

Crown Trick

Crown Trick is a turn-based roguelike inspired by the old Labyrinth games. Players must venture through an always-changing randomly generated maze. Each room the player explores is different from the last: some have monsters, others – some more interesting surprises. Every move could be the last, as enemies move along with the player.

Crown Trick is available on both Xbox and PC. If you’re interested, take a look at our Crown Trick review.

Crusader Kings 3

Crusader Kings 3 is the ultimate king simulator, giving players full control of a monarch. Choose your nobles, expand your dynasty, marry, have children, and die in the best way possible. It is all there – in Crusader Kings 3.

Crusader Kings 3 is available on PC and Xbox, on Game Pass.

Dicey Dungeons

Dicey Dungeons is a fast-paced deck-building roguelike where players control a walking die. In Dicey Dungeons, players must roll to determine their attacks, and the damage those will deal to the enemies.

Dicey Dungeons is available on Xbox and PC, on Game Pass.

Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age

Dragon Quest XI Turn-based Battle

Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age is the eleventh part of the long-running RPG series, created by the masters of JRPGs – Square Enix. This version of the popular game is the definitive one, containing all the extra content not featured in the original release.

Available on Xbox and PC.

The Dungeon of Naheulbeuk

The Dungeon of Naheulbeuk The Amulte of Chaos

The Dungeon of Naheulbeuk is a comedic tactical turn-based game about a group of adventures, whom you really wouldn’t expect to save the day. They are clumsy, inexperienced and feisty; not the best attributes for heroes.

The Dungeon of Naheulbeuk: The Amulet of Chaos – Chicken Edition is available for Xbox and PC, on Game Pass.

Echo Generations

Echo Generation

Echo Generations is a turn-based adventure with a supernatural twist. The best way to describe this game is if Stranger Things was set during the 90s, and was a turn-based game about a brother and sister going on a mysterious adventure together.

Echo Generations is available on Xbox and PC.

Edge of Eternity

EdgeofEternityReviewFig3

Edge of Eternity shares a similar style with the Final Fantasy games – retaining the turn-based battles that series was famous for. The story follows Daryon and his sister Selene as they try to find a cure for the all-consuming Corrosion.

Edge of Eternity is available for Xbox and PC, on Game Pass.

Empire of Sin

Empire of Sin

Ever wanted to run a criminal empire with turn-based tactical battles? Empire of Sin is a criminal empire sim where you’ll be taking over 1920s Chicago.

Available on Xbox and PC – on Game Pass.

Europa Universalis IV

It is time to take to the seas – in the fourth part of the popular Europa Universalis series. Build your empire, take control of other nations, trade – and rule the waves!

Only on PC.

Fae Tactics

Fae Tactics is Final Fantasy Tactics in everything but its name. In Fae Tactics, players take on the role of a young magic-user, Peony – on her journey across a world full of mystery and danger.

Available on both Xbox and PC.

Fallout Tactics

Fallout Tactics is the tactical sequel to the best-selling series. In this installment, players must take charge of the Brotherhood of Steel, and survive against whatever challenges the wasteland throws at them.

Available only on PC.

Fallout and Fallout 2

Fallout 1997

These two games were the spiritual successors to Wasteland before the latter finally got a sequel. Before Fallout became a real-time RPG, it was a post-apocalyptic CRPG with turn-based combat.

Both games are available on PC, on Game Pass.

Final Fantasy XIII

Final Fantasy XIII is, as you might’ve guessed, the thirteenth part of the long-running series. Although considered the worst of the series, it’s still a great turn-based game.

Final Fantasy XIII is available on Xbox and PC – on Game Pass.

Thank you for reading, and stay tuned for part two!
