Future Games Show 2024

Gamescom 2024 has kicked off, and before the Future Games Show, let’s be honest, aside from Civilization VII, there was little to get excited about for us turn-based lovers. I was secretly hoping for a surprise XCOM 3 announcement, but that’s a story for another day…maybe.

Thankfully, when the Future Games Show rolled around, things took a turn for the better with the announcement of several intriguing RPGs and more details on some that were already on my radar. Here’s a quick rundown of what was revealed and showcased during the event.

Let’s See All The Announcements Of The Show

First off, let me introduce Greedfall II. You might wonder why an action RPG is being mentioned here. Well, in this sequel, the combat system has been tweaked to allow for pausing and giving commands to the allies, making it a real-time with pause (RTwP) game. Since this type of game occasionally pops up on our radar, here it is: Greedfall II: The Dying World. The story is set three years before the events of the first game, and you won’t have to wait long because it’s coming to Early Access on PC via Steam on September 24th, with a release on PlayStation and Xbox to follow.

Rogue Waters Overview
One of the big surprises is surely Rogue Waters from Hard West 2

One of the most highly anticipated titles announced during the event is Rogue Waters. Developed by the studio behind Hard West 2 (Ice Code Games), this pirate-themed tactical RPG promises a lot of freedom, a roguelite progression system with plenty to unlock, and naval battles where players can unleash various weapons and strategies before boarding enemy ships for grid-based melee tactical combat. Oh, and did I mention players can summon gigantic sea creatures? Yes, the protagonist is a sort of undead pirate, and among his pets is the Kraken and other giant monsters. The hype is real, especially since the release is just around the corner, set for September 30th on PC via Steam, EPIC, and GOG.

Next up is Dimensionals, a vibrant roguelite deckbuilder that was already announced back in March 2024, with several playtest sessions open to players over the past few months. During the event, the developer showcased a new trailer highlighting some of the game’s features, including boss battles where players need to combine the skills of various characters to emerge victorious. While there’s no release date yet, there is a demo available now.

Another title we’re already quite familiar with is Bloomtown: A Different Story, which got a new trailer and a release date announcement. Mark your calendars for September 24th on PC via Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch. It seems like September is going to be packed, so get ready!

Bloomtown JRPG
The Persona-like Bloomtown: A Different Story announced its release date

This title, which we’ve discussed frequently before, is a complex RPG that integrates social dynamics, represented by relationships with various characters and NPCs in the game world. It also has life-simulator elements like finding a summer job, deciding how to spend the day, and more, along with a combat system that includes monster-catching mechanics. In short, it’s a turn-based RPG that’s sure to consume many hours of our lives.

The event also featured more of Sid Meier’s Civilization VIIshowcasing additional gameplay and features of the 4X strategy game. Remember the release date set for February 11, 2025, on PC and consoles.

The Future Games Show also had a spot for Lost Eidolons: Veil of the Witch, which we recently got our hands on. A new trailer revealed its early access launch window for late 2024, marking this as a roguelite spin-off of the original title released in 2022.

Beyond Galaxyland RPG
Beyond Galaxyland shows off great premises

Then, there was a substantial gameplay trailer for a title that I believe could become the sleeper hit of 2024. It’s called Beyond Galaxyland, an intriguing mix of space adventure and a combat system reminiscent of Final Fantasy. The pixel art is charming, and besides featuring numerous planets to explore, the game allows players to capture alien creatures and use them in battle as allies. The real challenge? The release date. Like many others, Beyond Galaxyland is also launching on PC and consoles on September 24th. It’ll be interesting to see how we manage to juggle all these releases.

Lastly, there was a gameplay trailer for the 2D tactical game SteamWorld Heist II, which was released a few days ago on PC and consoles. The trailer highlighted the features of this second installment in the series, which we’ll soon be reviewing on our website.

That’s everything you need to know about the Future Games Show 2024 when it comes to RPGs, strategy games, and anything in between with turn-based mechanics. Let me know what you think by joining me on Twitter, Reddit, and our Discord server. Catch you later!
