After more than a decade of shifting directions and reboots, Mewgenics finally has a firm release date. The latest trailer confirms that Edmund McMillen and Tyler Glaiel’s long-in-development project will launch in February 2026.

The trailer, which mixes live action and animated sequences, highlights the game’s offbeat tone and grotesque humor.
Overpopulation, dismembered cats, and absurd naming sequences reflect McMillen’s characteristic blend of dark comedy and shock value. Alongside that, the video gives the first structured look at gameplay, showing turn-based tactical combat, base building, and the breeding systems at the heart of the design.

Mewgenics combines roguelite structure with tactical role-playing. Each run involves building and managing a team of cats with randomized traits, moving through combat encounters, and expanding a home base to prepare for future expeditions.
Developer interviews suggest the scale is significant: casual playthroughs may last 200 hours, while expert runs could be finished in about 50.

The game’s themes extend beyond parody. Genetics plays a central role, with traits like autism, dyslexia, and primordial dwarfism represented not just as limitations but as strategic opportunities.
For example, a cat with autism may excel at innate spellcasting, while dyslexia can alter combat numbers in ways that create both risks and unexpected advantages.
McMillen has noted these inclusions are partly personal, reflecting his own experiences, and are intended to reinforce the idea of making the most of what is inherited rather than treating conditions as flaws.

The soundtrack is composed by Ridiculon, known for work on The Binding of Isaac and Super Meat Boy. Development is in the final stretch, with major features already complete. Over the coming months, the team will finish cutscenes, polish visuals and effects, balance late-game encounters, and run internal playtests.
Mewgenics was first teased in 2012 by Team Meat but was shelved after scope issues. McMillen later revived the project in 2018 with Glaiel, reimagining it as a turn-based roguelite rather than a life simulator.
With the latest trailer confirming both gameplay direction and release date set for February 10, 2026, on PC via Steam, the project now appears close to the finish line.
