Another intriguing JRPG I’ve been following for a while has finally been given a 2025 release date, but only for Japan. Western audiences will have to wait until 2026.

Publisher Happinet and developer IKINAGAMES have confirmed that the role‑playing game The Starbites will launch in Japan in 2025.

The story centres on Lukida, a teenage scrap hunter who survives by salvaging crashed star‑ship parts on the desert planet Bitter. Once a prosperous resort world, Bitter was reduced to dunes and derelict pleasure domes when orbiting warships fell from the sky during the closing hours of a galaxy‑wide conflict.

Lukida’s life inside the makeshift vertical settlement of Delight City is framed as a cheerful struggle; vibrant markets, neon lighting, and laid‑back banter offset the bleak landscape that stretches beyond the city walls.

Her original plan is to earn enough credits to escape the planet, but an event the locals call the Oracle sets off a chain of anomalies that pull her into a larger mystery involving rogue artificial intelligences, reawakened mechs, and unexplained energy storms.

Every major character pilots a personalised mech that functions both as a traversal vehicle and an avatar in combat. IKINAGAMES emphasises full mechanical customisation at the component level: players can swap engines for longer range or heavier armour, mount different primary and secondary weapons, and repaint outer hull plates to match personal taste.

Cosmetic changes carry straight into real‑time cinematic sequences, avoiding the immersion break that occurs when pre‑rendered movies ignore the player’s chosen colour schemes or equipment.

More than fifty such sequences will advance the narrative without loading screens, and each one is voiced in Japanese, Korean and English.

The battle system retains a classic turn‑order timeline but is energised by two-layered mechanics.

A Driver’s High gauge increases whenever a mech attacks or takes damage; once full, that unit can cut the queue for an immediate extra turn, creating opportunities to deliver finishing blows or throw up a last‑second shield.

The Support System triggers automatically when allied pilots meet positional and status requirements, chaining their abilities into a short, cinematic team attack. Together, these mechanics aim to keep encounters dynamic while preserving the deliberate pacing.

The Starbites will launch on October 16, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch at a price of 6,380 yen. Physical copies will be produced for PlayStation 5 and Switch, while the Xbox version will remain a digital‑only release because of what the companies describe as manufacturing‑cost constraints and limited shelf space.

Although the announcement is focused on the domestic market, IKINAGAMES states that development of a Windows PC edition and full Western console localisation is already well underway.

The studio is holding back a precise timetable for those versions until voice recording and certification processes are complete, but it continues to reference a broad second‑quarter 2026 window for a simultaneous global roll‑out on Steam, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series consoles, and Switch.

Importers who prefer not to wait will find that the Japanese release ships with an English text option from the start, although its voice track defaults to Japanese unless the host system language is changed. Below the Japanese Release Date Trailer
