Weekly RPG News and Releases July 13, 2024

It’s been quite a busy week with some noteworthy news and a few announcements, one of which is particularly interesting. There are also some new releases to introduce.

Regarding our content this week, we covered Anoxia Station, a turn-based strategy game set deep within the earth, where the player must hire specialists from around the world to survive and uncover what lies beneath. We also introduced Hibernaculum, a fascinating first-person dungeon crawler that pays homage to titles of the past, and just yesterday, I talked about Skillsworn, an intriguing tactical RPG that focuses on combat and the intelligent use of a wide array of skills and items.

I also decided to recap all the most promising turn-based JRPGs set to be released up until 2026. If you enjoy the genre, you’ll find 20 truly spectacular titles. Now, let’s dive into all the news from our turn-based world.

RPG News Of The Last Week

Let’s start with Dimensionals. A colorful and stylish Roguelite that takes players to Atlantis to stop an unknown threat. It features a combat system typically seen in deckbuilders, with telegraphed attacks, shields to raise, and skills to combine among different party members. The game was announced this week, with the trailer also published on IGN’s pages and the opportunity to request access to the Playtest to try the game right away.

Now let’s move on to some news that will make RPG enthusiasts who were eagerly awaiting the new content for the excellent Rogue Trader cringe. Owlcat Games has announced that the release date for the Void Shadows DLC for Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader has been postponed from August 8 to September 24. The delay is to allow additional time for polishing and ensuring a smooth gameplay experience.

The upcoming DLC introduces Kibellah, a Death Cult Assassin companion, and new enhancement options for the player’s voidship, including additional crew members and a new hangar. This decision follows the recent release of a significant 1.2 patch that brought major balance changes, cutscene improvements, and numerous other updates.

Now, here’s an announcement about a title I hadn’t been following. It was supposed to be a new entry in the Front Mission series, but after a split between the developers involved in the project, it turned into a new IP called Metal Storm. HK Ten Tree announced that Metal Storm, a turn-based strategy RPG featuring customizable mechs, will launch in Japan for PC, Android, and iOS in 2024. Below the teaser trailer.

Initially developed as Front Mission: Borderscape, the project transformed into MechArashi after a split between developers ZLONGAME, Black Jack Studio, and Square Enix. Players can expect gameplay involving AP management for movements and attacks. Already available in Chinese-speaking regions, Metal Storm will serve as the localized Japanese version of MechArashi, with an English release still unconfirmed.

How many of you have played Jeanne d’Arc? It’s an RPG in the style of Final Fantasy Tactics, released many years ago on the PSP. This week Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that the tactical strategy RPG Jeanne d’Arc will be available for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 on July 16, 2024. This re-release comes with enhancements like up-rendering, rewind, quick save, and custom video filters. Developed by Level-5, Jeanne d’Arc follows the titular character’s quest to save France from demonic forces during the Hundred Years’ War.

To be honest, I also missed the news that CyberConnect2 was already working on the third chapter of its Fuga: Melodies of Steel saga. Today, I read on RPGsite that the developers announced that Fuga: Melodies of Steel 3 will be significantly longer than its predecessors, with the game’s scenario length and illustrations more than doubling those of the previous entries.

Revealed at AnthroCon and detailed during an Anime Expo 2024 interview, the final installment in the Fuga trilogy will introduce new features, including a flying tank transformation for the Taranis. With previous games averaging around 20 hours of gameplay, the third installment is expected to offer approximately 40 hours of content. Fuga: Melodies of Steel 3 is currently in development for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

One of the games I’m most looking forward to is Breachway, which has experienced several delays in its release date over the months. This week, Hooded Horse publisher finally announced what seems to be the definitive release date: set for August 30, 2024. We’ll be able to play this intriguing mix of FTL and deckbuilding on PC. Here are all the details.

And we’ll wrap up this week’s news with a truly exciting project announced just a few hours ago. It’s called Paradise: Duality Unbound, a tactical strategy game featuring base-building dynamics where you can conduct research and learn more about the apocalyptic world surrounding you. You will fight on grid-based mini maps against eldritch creatures, relying on an ability called Duality Manipulation, which flips the map upside down, altering it and giving the player an advantage. You can find more details here.

Now, let’s move on to this week’s major releases in RPGs and strategy games. The first one to mention is the stylish historical strategy game Songs of Steel: Hispania, which places players in the shoes of the Roman Empire or its opponents, offering tactical combat where you can leverage height, flanking attacks, and much more.

Staying on the topic of strategy games, there’s Wastelander, a survival game that takes players to an alien planet where they must first establish themselves and then try to escape before a deadly storm hits. The title was available in early access, and now it’s out in its complete form.

Lastly, there’s Prune & Milo, a fun RPG that combines puzzle exploration dynamics with minimalist, retro-style tactical combat. That’s all for this week. As always, I invite you to join our Discord server, follow me on X, and subscribe to my YouTube channel.
