D20Studios has released a major update for Abalon: Roguelike Tactics CCG, bringing sweeping changes to the tactical deckbuilder along with the launch of its first paid Steam DLC, Animal Gear.
The update, labeled version 2.70, revises core systems, adds new encounters and modifiers, expands progression, and introduces a large set of new equipment. The Animal Gear expansion complements these changes by giving players a new pool of cards designed specifically for animal companions and non-humanoid units.
Since its full release in May 2023, Abalon has continued to evolve through frequent updates, and version 2.70 represents one of the largest revisions to date.
The game combines roguelite progression, tactical grid-based battles, and deck-building mechanics, with more than four hundred cards available for experimentation.
Exploration spans diverse biomes such as deserts, snowy landscapes, and dungeons, each featuring unique events and enemies.
The equipment system has been reworked to allow unlimited equipping and unequipping during battles, as long as a unit has not acted that turn. Helmets can now be worn by any unit, including animals, and body armor has been divided into humanoid and animal gear categories.
Fourteen new equipment items have been added, such as gladiator helmets, paladin armor, and heavy weapons like the giant mace and breaker sword. More than 200 items have also been rebalanced with updated mechanics and gold values.
Players will now encounter new events such as the Meditating Monk in the snow biome and the Skeleton Bros in dungeons.
The Descent mode now extends to levels fifteen through nineteen, and three new challenge modifiers, Unsuspecting Ambush, Grave Robbers, and Assassins, introduce new risks to each run. Mechanical updates include the addition of True Sight for revealing stealth units, changes to overwatch interactions, and immunity adjustments for stun and immobilize effects.
The Animal Gear DLC builds on these changes with 34 new cards split between harnesses, helmets, and armor.
Harnesses grant animals new powers ranging from fire-breathing to speed boosts, while helmets can be equipped by any unit type.
The DLC also includes new armor pieces for humanoid characters, offering bonuses such as elemental resistance and attack buffs. Animal Gear appears in dedicated chests and shops to ensure it complements rather than dilutes existing loot.
Abalon remains available on Steam with support for cross-platform progression. Purchases of DLC on Steam also carry over to linked mobile accounts, though base game ownership still requires a separate purchase on each platform. Below are more details about the update and the trailer.

In between the DnD style events and slaying of enemies you’ll be collecting cards, lots of cards. Every Summoner is linked to two classes, including Arcane, Celestial, Nature, Void, and Chaos. These classes offer different playstyles: Chaos contains a lot of fire AOE spells for big damage whereas Arcane provides the ability to mind-control your enemies.
Your deck in Abalon is capped at 20 cards, so you can collect all the cards you like knowing they won’t hinder your current build. If you wish to change your playstyle halfway through your adventure then simply roast some marshmallows on the campfire and chat with the Cosmic Tortoise.
Abalon offers an ever-changing adventure so it’s important to adapt to the situation. The Battle Mode allows you to build a constructed deck from the cards you have discovered during your adventures. Bringing this deck, along with two allied units you can test your might against the toughest of foes!
