Classic gamebook adventure Castle of Lost Souls arrives as a fully integrated questline in Golnir, adding new locations, choices, and dangers to the open-world RPG

Prime Games has announced a new DLC for its narrative-driven open-world RPG Fabled Lands, bringing the cult gamebook adventure The Castle of Lost Souls into the digital adaptation as a full Fabled Lands Quest expansion.

The announcement confirms that players will soon be able to tackle a dedicated questline inspired by Dave Morris and Yve Newnham’s Golden Dragon gamebook inside the existing sandbox of Harkuna.

Fabled Lands itself adapts the original open-world gamebook series into a systemic RPG where players travel freely between regions, manage their own ship, wealth, codewords, and blessings, and piece together stories across a non-linear map.

Released on Steam in 2022, the game has steadily expanded with DLC such as Lords of the Rising Sun and The Serpent King’s Domain, each adding new territories, quests, and mechanics while keeping the same free-roaming structure.

Castle of Lost Souls follows that same model: framed as a Quest integrated into the main campaign, designed to be discovered and tackled by existing characters mid-journey.

Castle of Lost Souls focuses on new content in Golnir, one of the series’ most grounded and folkloric regions. The DLC introduces fresh locations there, including the town of Lynton, and builds a full quest arc around the Castle and its sinister legacy.

Players can expect a structured, multi-stage investigation that threads through the countryside, drawing them toward the fortress and its demonic power. Long-time gamebook readers will recognize the premise: the arch-fiend Slank, dangerous bargains, and a journey that sits somewhere between rural horror tale and heroic contract work.

The digital version is built to sit naturally alongside existing Fabled Lands content, so the Castle becomes another dangerous destination on the map.

Adapted by writer Paul Gresty, who previously worked on The Serpent King’s Domain, this new DLC will feature a dense network of choices, failures, side paths, and conditional outcomes tuned for the game’s mechanics: codewords that remember past decisions, items and blessings that unlock alternatives, and consequences that can follow the player beyond the dungeon.

For Fabled Lands players used to wandering into trouble at their own pace, this Quest structure offers a sharper narrative spine while still respecting the open-world format.

Encounters in and around Golnir tie into existing character builds and resource management, giving more reasons to revisit the region with veteran adventurers and more early-to-mid game hooks for new runs.

The new areas and events promise additional routes to wealth, rare items, and danger, but within the same logic: tough checks, meaningful risks, and rewards that feel earned rather than dumped on the player.

For fans of the original gamebooks, this DLC also closes a loop that has been teased on the Fabled Lands blog for years, where Castle of Lost Souls as a Quest was discussed as a natural fit for Golnir and the PC adaptation.

Castle of Lost Souls has no release date for now, but we will learn more and share details soon. Below is some information on the base game.
