A few weeks ago, I published a follow-up video to my article on the best RPGs of 2024, focusing on upcoming releases as we approach the end of the year. It’s a genre we often discuss—a genre that some claim is “on the brink of extinction”—yet it’s also one that continues to deliver gems year after year. There’s this constant talk about how turn-based JRPGs need innovation or risk becoming stale, but honestly, I think they’re far from being in crisis.

This year, we’ve seen a lot of remakes and remasters, like The Legend of Legacy HD, Persona 3 Reload, and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. But 2024 is also packed with big releases, including Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, Terra Memoria, and Eiyuden Chronicles: Hundred Heroes so far.
Some upcoming games, like Metaphor ReFantazio (which just dropped a free demo) Sky Oceans: Wings for Hire, promise fresh twists on the genre, while others, such as Mario & Luigi Brothership and Romancing SaGa II: Revenge of the Seven, are highly anticipated.
