Wartales Contract: The Fief DLC

I think Wartales is steadily turning into something truly unique as Shiro Games announced a new expansion for its tactical strategy RPG today, confirming that Contract: The Fief will arrive on PC via Steam and GOG in September 2025.

The studio places sales for the base game at more than one million units, which sets the stage for a sizable audience to test a different side of life on the road.

This add-on shifts attention from pure contract work to long-term stewardship of land, people, and policy, while keeping pace with the travel rhythm that defines the campaign.

Wartales - Contract: The Fief

Contract: The Fief adds a system that lets your mercenary company claim a domain and guide it over time. You pass laws, invest in roads and buildings, and set production goals, then try to keep up with a population that grows more demanding as weeks roll by.

The feature does not sit in a separate menu. It hooks into the existing rest mechanic that advances time in Wartales. Every time the party makes camp, the clock moves forward, and the fief either meets needs or falls short. Food, security, education, and comfort become regular concerns rather than once in a while prompts.

The developer describes a structure that grows district by district. Players pick a central hub for each district and select production buildings that serve the needs of the people.

As the domain matures, new groups appear and push the identity of the fief in distinct directions.

Scholars can pull the culture toward study and craft. Peasants can push for steady output and lower risk. Nobles can move policies toward prestige and control. If you tolerate shady dealings, criminal influence can rise as well.

The makeup of these groups shapes events, unlocks building effects, and nudges diplomacy with neighboring realms, which can change how guards and traders treat your troop on the road.

Governance sits at the heart of the expansion. You can enact laws and assign mandates that steer work toward a seasonal goal, then watch how those choices affect morale.

Happiness rises when people feel safe, fed, and heard. It falls when bandits raid farms or when taxes bite too hard. The loop rewards attention to trends during rest screens, where you set the next priority before you ride out for another contract.

Shiro Games positions this as long-term progression that fits naturally inside the loop of travel, battle, and camp life that Wartales already teaches.

Quentin Lapeyre, game director at Shiro Games, frames the DLC as a response to a common request from the community. He says Contract: The Fief provides an enjoyable and dynamic long-term progression system that the team believes fans have been hoping for.

Wartales The Beast Hunt DLC

The add on’s promise will likely appeal to players who enjoy planning between fights. That said, it does add management layers that not every tactics fan craves. The price lands at 12.99 dollars, 12.99 euros, and 10.99 pounds, which places it in the typical range for a focused content pack on PC.

Wartales launched in full in April 2023 after a period in early access, and it blends grid-based combat with freeform travel across a low fantasy world, asking players to manage gear, wages, food, and morale while taking jobs that range from bandit hunts to rescue work.

Since its release, the game has grown through updates and several sizeable expansions like the latest The Beast Hunt. Contract: The Fief continues that line by rooting the mercenary fantasy in a place you shape and defend, which gives weight to choices that used to fade once a contract ended.

Contract: The Fief arrives in September on Steam and GOG with no precise date yet. If you plan to return to the game, think about what kind of ruler your crew would become under pressure.
