Monster Hunter Stories and Wings of Ruin Land on Xbox With Cross-Game Bonuses Ahead of Stories 3

The Monster Hunter Stories saga has completed another step in its platform tour. Capcom has released Monster Hunter Stories and Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin on Xbox One, with both titles fully playable on Xbox Series X|S.

Monster Hunter Stories

The pair of turn-based spin-offs is now available across all major platforms, joining Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4/5, and PC via Steam, and lining things up neatly ahead of Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection, due on March 13, 2026.

The first Monster Hunter Stories shifts the focus of the series from hunting to riding. Players step into the role of a Rider raised in a village that lives alongside monsters, forming bonds with them rather than carving them up for gear.

You steal eggs from nests out in the field, hatch them, and turn monsters into “Monsties” that fight and travel with you. Exploration leans on each Monstie’s field abilities; some can jump gaps, others can swim or climb, so your party choice matters both on and off the battlefield.

The turn-based combat system uses a rock–paper–scissors triangle of Power, Speed, and Technical attacks, with head-to-head clashes rewarding those who correctly read enemy patterns.

Building up the Kinship Gauge lets Riders trigger powerful Kinship Skills alongside their Monsties, while the Rite of Channeling system allows you to move genes between monsters to customize resistances and movesets, creating a party that can handle late-game threats.

The modern release on consoles and PC adds full voice acting in Japanese and English, plus a museum mode with concept art and music, making this version the most complete way to revisit the original spin-off.

Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin builds on that base with larger maps, more elaborate cutscenes, and a stronger focus on narrative.

Monster Hunter Stories Remastered

Set in the village of Mahana after a mass disappearance of Rathalos around the world, the story follows the grandchild of legendary Rider Red and a wyverian girl named Ena, who arrives carrying a mysterious Rathalos egg. The hatchling, Razewing Ratha, is tied to an ominous prophecy that suggests his wings could bring ruin to the world.

As the Rider, you travel across multiple regions investigating strange pits that spew energy and create rage-rayed monsters with glowing eyes, while trying to understand whether Ratha is a threat or the key to stopping a larger catastrophe.

The battle system retains the Power/Speed/Technical triangle but adds extra layers: Buddies join your party so that two Riders and two Monsties can be on the field, Double Attacks trigger when you and your Monstie use the same winning type in a head-to-head, and the Kinship Gauge fuels flashy Kinship Skills that can turn boss encounters around.

Outside combat, you customize your Rider, manage gene layouts on Monsties, and tackle both story quests and co-op missions, giving the sequel more long-term structure than the first game.

With the launch, Capcom is also tying the series more tightly together through cross-game save data bonuses on Xbox and other platforms.

Save data from Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin on the same system unlocks the “Mahana Rider” outfit for Navirou in Monster Hunter Stories, giving the talkative Felyne a look that matches the sequel’s setting.

The same Stories 2 save file also unlocks a “Rider” layered armor set in Monster Hunter Rise, while Monster Hunter Rise save data returns the favor by granting the “Kamura Garb” layered armor in Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin.

These bonuses encourage long-time players who have already spent time in Rise and Stories 2 to bring their history with them as they pick up the Xbox versions.

The release also comes with a broader push to make catching up easy across the ecosystem. On Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam, Capcom is offering a discounted bundle that groups both Stories titles together, giving new Riders a single purchase that covers the entire turn-based spin-off line on their platform of choice.

Xbox players can similarly grab both games individually or through the new Monster Hunter Stories Collection, with features like 60 fps support and online multiplayer for head-to-head duels or co-op quests.

All of this sets the stage for Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection, which is bringing the subseries forward on modern hardware. The third entry is in development at Capcom using the RE Engine and is planned for release on March 13, 2026 on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam.

Early information points to a story set in the Kingdom of Azuria, where players act as the heir and last Rathalos Rider, trying to understand a phenomenon called the Encroachment that crystallizes monsters and fuels conflict with the neighboring Vermeil Empire.

Trailers highlight twin Rathalos hatching from a single egg, the return of fan-favorite monsters like Magnamalo, and an art style that leans closer to cel-shaded fantasy, while preserving the turn-based combat and monster-bonding core that define the Stories branch.
