Diviner Dungeon Crawler RPG

Diviner is a promising RPG with lots of cool features

Lately, many first-person dungeon crawlers with turn-based mechanics have come out—a genre I’m passionate about. So, you can imagine my excitement when I stumbled across an intriguing RPG on Reddit, developed by indie studio Born of Three, called Diviner.

This game takes the dungeon crawler formula to a whole new level of complexity, with stunning graphics and a deeply inspired setting. I tried the demo today, and I was blown away by the variety of elements the game brings to the table.

Diviner RPG

During exploration, Diviner feels a lot like Skyrim, but set in an atmosphere that’s straight out of Dark Souls. It doesn’t use grids while you’re exploring, but once you engage an enemy, the grid-based system kicks in, along with action points that dictate how far you can move and how many attacks you can make before the enemy takes their turn.

One of the game’s main focuses is on weapons—their durability and the essential, if not downright necessary, hunt for resources to upgrade them. Each weapon not only deals specific types of damage, like slashing or blunt force, but also comes with slots where you can add elements that unlock new skills.

You can find these resources on the bodies of defeated enemies or even steal them during combat. On top of that, your character has slots for rings, which provide additional bonuses and skills.

Another cool feature is weapon switching during battles. Not only does it help you exploit enemy weaknesses, but it also grants passive bonuses. Diviner is packed with potential, and I highly recommend giving the demo a shot. Sure, some animations are still missing—enemy movements, for example, are pretty much non-existent—but the environments are impressive, and the gameplay features are fresh and original. Below you can find an overview via Steam, screens and trailer.

About This Game

Enter a dark and vague world, with danger lurking behind every corner and horrific foes withering under the scorched Sun. You play as a Tethered, one of many born from clay and dirt with a weapon bound to your soul, and you must adapt, salvage and strengthen your destructive powers to slay all that stands in your way. With strategic turn based combat and a free roam dungeon crawl experience, every decision you make will pave the path forward.

  • Strategic and deep turn based grid based combat
  • Powerful builds and gear combinations using Binds to augment your Weapons on a turn by turn basis
  • Full 3D movement, capturing the feel and depth of old school dungeon crawlers with the modern convenience of controls in games today
  • A cruel but beautiful world with environmental story telling

In Diviner, you are only as strong as your understanding of your tools. Wield powerful Tethers, ranging from flintlock pistols to greatswords, and imbue them with ancient magic and techniques. Use Binds to enhance your weapons and switch weapons during combat to gain the advantage over your enemies. Rebuild and prolong the life of your weapons with the scraps of your defeated foe’s tethers, or upgrade your weapons to take on even deadlier adversaries.
