Square Enix has officially announced DRAGON QUEST VII Reimagined, a full remake of the 2000 PlayStation JRPG, releasing worldwide on February 5, 2026, giving both longtime fans and newcomers the chance to experience one of the most ambitious entries in the series with a new look and modern updates.

The story begins on Estard Island, where a group of childhood friends uncover ancient ruins and set out on an adventure that spans both past and present.
As in the original, players will collect stone fragments to unlock access to lost islands and forgotten eras, piecing together the mysteries of a world threatened by dark forces.
The remake keeps the vignette-style storytelling that defined Dragon Quest VII, but trims and streamlines its structure to create a faster, more accessible experience while retaining its narrative depth.
One of the most striking changes is the visual direction. Akira Toriyama’s original character designs have been recreated in a handcrafted 3D style, with towns, dungeons, and fields designed like detailed dioramas. This art direction highlights both charm and atmosphere, aiming to appeal to global audiences while staying true to the classic look.

Combat has also been updated. Monsters roam visibly in the field, and weaker enemies can be dispatched instantly to maintain pacing.
Battles remain turn-based, but a new Moonlighting system lets characters equip two Vocations at once, offering more flexibility in skills and strategy.
Each Vocation includes unique perks, such as the Monster Master’s ability to summon allies mid-fight, adding new tactical depth. Additional quality-of-life features, including battle speed options and automated strategies, ensure smoother play.
Producer Takeshi Ichikawa emphasized that the remake is designed to capture the warmth of Toriyama’s characters while presenting a more approachable version of the story.

“We wanted audiences worldwide to grow fond of the charming characters and experience the depth of the story in a vivid new way,” he said, noting the handcrafted visuals and streamlined storytelling as key steps toward that goal.
Dragon Quest VII Reimagined will be available in multiple editions. The Standard Edition includes the base game, while the Digital Deluxe Edition adds bonus DLC sets, costumes, and early access.
A Collector’s Edition, available exclusively from the Square Enix Store, includes physical extras such as a Smile Slime plush, SteelBook case, and a ship-in-a-bottle figure, alongside the digital content.
Preorders also come with early in-game bonuses, including a Dragon Quest VIII costume for the protagonist and special seeds to boost character progression.
The remake will be available worldwide on February 5, 2026 on Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and Microsoft Store.
