Dream Warrior is a retro-style RPG that blends the charm of classic 8-bit games with a modern roguelite twist. Developed by the indie studio High Tower Games, the game takes a comedic yet heartfelt approach to saving the world — but with a twist. Instead of playing as a destined hero, you’re the town drunk.

The premise is simple but clever: the Demon Lord threatens to destroy the world, but instead of a legendary warrior rising to the occasion, it’s you — the local alcoholic — who steps up. Armed with a rusty sword and questionable resolve, you set out to traverse the Dream World, uncover hidden truths, and maybe, just maybe, become something better.
Gameplay That Blends the Old and New
Dream Warrior combines the turn-based combat reminiscent of early JRPGs like Dragon Quest with the unpredictable node-based exploration seen in roguelites like FTL. Each run is fairly short, keeping the pace snappy, but randomness and depth encourage multiple playthroughs. As you progress, you unlock seven distinct classes, including quirky options like “Goth” and “Drunk,” each offering unique abilities and build potential.
The game doesn’t just poke fun at its unlikely hero; it also delivers a surprisingly earnest story wrapped in terrible jokes and obscure pop culture references. Along the way, you’ll encounter memorable NPCs, complete quests for special items, and uncover one of four possible endings. There’s even a glimmer of redemption hidden within the game’s chaotic, booze-soaked journey.
The Story Behind the Game
High Tower Games, helmed by solo developer Robert Hightower, started Dream Warrior as a small jam project during a challenging period in his life. What began as a lighthearted experiment eventually grew into a full game after positive feedback from local events. Now available on Steam and itch.io. Below is an overview, screens and trailer.
