Dungeon Settlers Overview

Build a settlement, prepare your party, and survive real-time with pause expeditions in CanOpener’s dark fantasy strategy RPG.

Dungeon Settlers is getting an official Steam demo on May 25, giving players an early look at CanOpener’s dark fantasy strategy game before its planned Early Access launch on September 10, 2026.

Dungeon Settlers RPG

The demo will be based on the current playtest build, with added bug fixes and missing content, though the developer notes that save compatibility may break between the Playtest, Demo, and Early Access stages.

The game mixes colony sim management with dungeon crawling. Players lead an expedition sent by the Guild to investigate and destroy a dungeon tied to the world’s calamities. Before sending anyone underground, they must build a working settlement in a barren land, provide food and shelter, manage resources, and prepare supplies for future expeditions.

Dungeon Settlers Expedition

Players can place walls and doors, create bedrooms and dining areas, set up production rooms with anvils and smelters, cultivate fields, craft rations and camping supplies, and unlock new buildings and equipment through research.

Party development is built around individual settlers rather than disposable units. Each member has six major abilities, talents, combat and life stats, plus traits shaped by race, background, and personality.

Dungeon Settlers Characters

Parties can include up to four characters, with skill paths tied to weapons and magic such as swords, maces, bows, and fire magic. Permadeath also plays a major role, so losing a trained member can hurt both the current run and the long-term settlement plan.

Combat uses real-time with pauses, and players can stop the action to read enemy patterns, reposition the party, and time skills built around effects like stun, bleed, burn, provoke, vulnerability, charge attacks, and summons.

Dungeon expeditions are randomly composed, with floors and rooms changing between runs. Regions can apply different environmental effects, while deeper areas offer rarer resources and more serious threats.

Dungeon Settlers Combat System

The Steam page mentions magical experiments, golems, acid-spitting monsters, dungeon merchants, gemstone veins, mandrakes, and other strange encounters waiting below.

CanOpener has also been using player feedback to adjust the game ahead of Early Access. Recent developer notes mention work on bugs, inventory UX, food supply, spoilage, mood management, and difficulty settings, with the team shifting the originally intended experience from Normal to Hard after testing.

The Early Access version is planned to launch with Regions 1 and 2 plus the Abyss, while the full release is planned to include six regions.

Dungeon Settlers is in development for Steam, with the official demo scheduled for May 25 and Early Access planned for September 10, 2026. For players who like the idea of a colony sim where every bed, meal, weapon, and injury matters before the dungeon door even opens, this is one to keep an eye on. Below is the announcement of the early access release date.
