To begin with, Square Enix has revealed Final Fantasy Resonance, an all-new RPG that marks the first full-HD (2D) game in the long-running franchise.

As stated earlier, the title is being developed at Square Enix and Lancarse Ltd., while Square Enix will be responsible for publication. Final Fantasy Resonance is scheduled to release on October 22, 2026, for PC and consoles.

Final Fantasy Resonance

In a sense, the Final Fantasy series has taken many different routes in recent years. Considering how nostalgic some fans (me included) of the series may feel about the old-school pixel graphics era of the series, Final Fantasy Resonance is intended for those types of players.

While the visuals are reminiscent of what we have seen with previous HD-2D titles by Square Enix (in terms of combining detailed pixel art, 3D environments and cinematics), there is much more to the game than a mere visual throwback.

Initial information suggests that Final Fantasy Resonance will follow the typical party-based JRPG formula, utilizing turn-based battle mechanics as well as offering open-world exploration with airships. Other elements of the game include crystals, espers, Moogles, and plenty of other classic Final Fantasy icons.

World Map Exploration

Rain and Lasswell, two knights from the Kingdom of Grandshelt, serve as the protagonists in Final Fantasy Resonance.

Both are tasked by their king to investigate the Earth Shrine. However, upon arrival, they are confronted by Veritas of the Dark, a powerful armored figure that destroys the Earth Crystal and sets off a chain reaction which brings about the downfall of the kingdom.

Although Rain and Lasswell manage to escape the destruction caused by Veritas, their airship is severely damaged and their fellow knights were killed in the disaster. Shortly thereafter, they meet up with Fina, a mysterious young woman who is somehow related to the crystals.

Together, they start out on a mission to save as many of these remaining crystals as possible across the world in order to stop whatever evil force is behind the destruction of the earth’s crystals.

A notable aspect of Final Fantasy Resonance is that it is based on the first season of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius. This version represents a reimagined take on a traditional console RPG as opposed to simply taking elements from the mobile game and translating them into a console/PC experience.

Combat is perhaps one area of the game where Resonance may get the most attention from fans of turn-based combat. It utilizes a timeline that displays upcoming actions for allies and enemies alike. Using this timeline allows players to clearly see how turn order will proceed prior to making a decision.

Weaknesses in enemies will also be used extensively. Exploiting enemy weaknesses will allow players to stagger opponents, break their defense, and gain additional actions during a special bonus phase. Should all enemies be staggered at once, the party will trigger a wide-sweeping stagger allowing access to a Resonance attack.

Another element added to build parties is called “Visions”. Visions are essentially crystallized echoes of characters encountered throughout the story as well as other entries in the Final Fantasy series.

Visions can enhance various aspects of your character, including stat boosts, skill unlocks, and defining their roles in battle. A single Vision can be equipped per party member, acquired skills can continue to be utilized under a certain cost limit, regardless of whether you switch to a different Vision or not.

Practically speaking, this creates a job-type feeling to party-building. With opportunities for hybrid builds, damage type configurations, support roles, and elemental coverage.

In addition to Visions that showcase legacy Final Fantasy heroes, Square Enix has confirmed other names, including Warrior of Light, Terra, Cloud, Shantotto, and Y’shtola. These will provide unique skills and combat applications.

Espers return as well, summoning legendary creatures such as Siren and Ramuh to aid the party for three turns before unleashing their final blow.

Espers

Additionally to the main storyline, Final Fantasy Resonance will contain side quests involving both members of the main cast and Brave Exvius characters. Expect to find airship exploration options along with optional dungeons featuring stronger enemies.

The wandering swordmaster Gilgamesh is present, as well as a Colosseum, Chamber of Arms, and an epic showdown with Ultima Weapon.

Final Fantasy Resonance is scheduled to release on October 22, 2026, for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Windows, and PC via Steam.
